Smile Mysterious gas leak...Comes and goes

My car has a BAD gas leak sometimes. The fuel is dripping out right by the right rear tire. I thought it was going to be a leaking fuel pump or a busted gas line but yesterday I replaced my fuel pump with a, new to me, SL55 fuel pump and not only was there no busted lines but I could see no signs of any past leaking.
Anyone ever have this issue?

On a side note, on my test drive an Audi r8 pulled up and wanted to race. Knowing my luck I decided to just let him go and make my turn to come home. Still a little bummed about it but I do not need to goto court.

I first saw this title I would say don't eat so much pizza....but then I read further and my thought is, maybe you have over filled the tank... just a thought, as most people try to get in that extra gallon in when you need to stop when it shuts off... There is an over flow tube at the top of your fill tube. Other than that, I wouldn't know as you stated there aren't any leaks at the pump or filter.

I thought about that Doc. Right now the needle sits just under a half tank. I am going to over fill it today and see if it comes back.

yeah, you really don't want any fuel in the filler tube once you fill up. Might check up the filler tube itself. Make sure something hasn't come lose and right where the tube goes into the tank. Good luck...

I would check all those hoses one more time, especially the one I posted about in the below linked thread "feed from fuel pump". If you looked at that hose under a flash light and when you squeezed it saw no cracks (like the ones in my post below) then it likely is something else. Good luck!

It is easy to check and could spare you losing half a tank of gas like I did and the potential for a serious fire. Looks like it may have a much higher probability than the other hoses down near the filter of wearing out due to the high pressure feeding through it from the fuel pump. Sorry for the large font but honestly I think this particular fuel line is a high wear item that I have not seen anyone advise to check specifically. All of the other hoses protruding from the fuel filter were fine, but the high pressure fuel line I have highlighted was much softer than all the other hoses and had hair line cracks all up and down it. I am surprised it did not blow much sooner.

Here is a pic to give you an idea of where the filter and pump are located. Note I have removed the "weak" line feeding from the fuel pump to the fuel filter.

A closer up pic of the side of the filter and pump from which I pulled the cracked hose:

Here is a pic of just one of the many substantial cracks in the fuel line hose I replaced:

I had intended to change the fuel filter but the lines pictured in the diagram as # 5 and # 10 were essentially fused to the old filter (which by the way seems to be working fine). since I was pressed for time in lieu of replacing the part (which had a Merc Part # on it and was not the MAHLE part I had purchased) which I believe to do I would have had to cut the old lines, I decided to let sleeping dogs lie and leave it be.

All in all this is a relatively straight forward job, just a little messy (prepare to get gas on you).

Hope this helps someone else!

I see that you mention that this hose was softer than the others, I notice that it says made in the USA, I think that this part has been added later and is not OEM It may be a fuel line but not a high pressure fuel line. The other lines appear to be braided internally.

If so, the OEM parts may be just fine and no cause for alarm.

You don't want to intentionally overfill your tank. This can cause the charcoal evap canister to flood and the car to not run properly until it dries out or you change it.

I will not overfill my tank but I will fill it up and watch closely. I will check the lines again but I do not think that is the cause of the problem as the leak is intermittent. Thanks for all the help guys.

Correct me if I am wrong, sadly it happens , but the tank cannot be overfilled because of the overfill check valve. When the tank is "Full" this check valve closes the tank to more gas and the gas will spill over at the filling tube and run onto the ground via the tube in the gas cover unit. This happens if the gas nozzle does not shut off or you lift the nozzle out of the gas filler tube. If the gas over fill flap is jams then the tank can over fill and all bets are off. The tank is quite complicated and is a sealed unit, if it fails you have to replace the whole unit.

Never ever ever continue to fill (top off) the tank. It will mess up the fuel system. If you get liquid gas in the vapor recovery system there will be no end of problems that will be extremely expensive to fix. Trust the members on this one!
