2004 V8 6-speed
You're right, if you take it off you might as well put a new gasket on. Hopefully the mating surfaces are still good and will seal fine with just the paper gasket and the V6 pump. Do you have forced induction plans for the future? I was thinking a V8 swap, with the SRT ecu to see boost and a low boost turbo would be all the power one might need with the V8. Not that you would necessarily "need" more power.

Lol no one "needs" more power but yes, I have plans for something lol. Not sure if I wan't to mess with this motor anymore though. If I did, I would go bigger valves, bored and stroked with FI and replace all of the internals. Because of that the 55K motor or the 63 are looking more like where I wan't to go. The 63 being the better by far. It's NA and damn close to as powerful overall as the 55K. Not sure how electronics would work out on it but hey, everyone said what I did couldn't be done
As far as how I would put FI on this motor is all up in the air. From what my research suggests the V8 AMG ECU's retain the remnant file for our key and cruise over circuit rather than CAN. So it would be a simple, swap Immo data with original and maybe play around in Developer of DAS. Now I say "simple" but I have ruined multiple ECU's learning this. I think the best idea would be to try that first, obviously with custom mapping from Eurocharged or something. If the car doesn't start then a custom SRT ECU with integrated drivers and custom files to control everything would be the way to go.
This is why I need to hurry up and move to Indy lol, so that someone doing this could bring the car to me and we can troubleshoot all the different ideas rather than sending them multiple times back and forth.
Once this is done though, for the people that don't have the tools or capability, don't fret. My welder friend and I are coming up with equipment to do this swap for people on the fly. We are making a foldable cherry picker and collecting the specific tools to the swap. If I have the ECU work done and he has the manifolds done, we can come to you and get the entire thing running in a 3-4 day weekend.-Just something to think about

Yes, you do need to come to Indy. I have several friends who wrench with me and I have no doubts we could assist in some way or another, access to 3 different shops with lifts and all necessary tools are only a call away. Just don't move too damn far away from the city, I can't be driving 1-2 hours each way to come help you troubleshoot

And hey! You know you would move that far out if you could scoop up a fricken walmart as a damn garage lol.
Right up until the 63 was FI lol. That would be my whole thing. Why work up an NA 500 if I could work up a NA 63 lol. Especially when the starting point is so much more on the 63.

I agree, it would be nice, but it would take me 1.5 hours to get to work everyday LOL. I can always use more garage, but I am not willing to move away from my friends and community to get it... yet.
It will most likely be a nightmare compared to what I did this time, but it's possible lol. There is always a way.
Build Update: Old water pump removed... Not sure what they used as sealer or a gasket because there was nothing there, other than a little red stuff that just flaked away. Talked to people and decided to go with Permatex like mentioned before. She is all bolted and everything but didn't have time to put the pulley, belt, fan, shroud, and coolant back in. The coolant I decided to just replace. It came out green but went in yellow?????????
Anyway, she should be up and smoking tires again tonight.
EDIT: which means keep your eyes peeled for a video
No leaks on the pump!!!
Now I'm getting the "intermittent MAF signal"... I checked and made sure she was all sealed up, but she still hesitates for a brief half a second when I punch her at idle or under 2K RPM's ish. I'll check everything again and make sure it's good to go but she's moving down the road roasting tires... Which are getting replaced after work today with used lol. For the price I could buy 5 of these tires in the next couple years and still not spend as much.
Oh well. And the way funds are right now I won't be getting a CAM sensor for a little while... Anyone have a spare to donate out of the graciousness of their heart?? lol I'll take the price out on the ECU work of your build? I know I know, fat chance.
Once the CAM sensor is in and the MAF's finicky *** is done complaining she should be all ready to go. Now I need to wash, wax and vacuum her lol.

I'll give it a shot, thanks... The part that gets me is the MAF sensor is a brand new bosch V8 sensor...
I'm going to be driving with dangling wires everywhere lol, CAM and now MAF lol.
Bought a new CAM sensor... Same deal, limp mode in around 2nd with a misfire on every cylinder. Not sure what's going on, I think I am going to check the harness and then the ECU.
Got my first kill though... I had been looking for someone to run with for a while but no one popped up when I would be driving. My wife was having her first ride in the car yesterday and I was taking it easy with some pulls in 2nd. Well we stop at a stop sign and in my rearview I saw a 2011-2013 STi... This has been the moment I was waiting for because even though they are sweet little cars (that I wanted for a while) I wanted my build to beat one or at least keep up. Well when he pulled up we made eye contact and my wife was on her phone, I said "babe, don't get mad" lol, by the time she said what me and the STi were going for it. My first launch in first and I had some wheelspin but thanks to saturdays tire visit the 90% tread 275's, when I backed out some and rolled on she hooked up and went. He was at my back bumper out of first, and most of second. Mid 3rd he was a bus length back almost, and mid 4th was almost 2!! I got out of it mid 4th and slowed down as he proceeded to make up ground lol. As I'm stopped at the next stop light he decided to turn right. I gave him a thumbs up and he smiled, as he turned I heard a pretty wicked sounding exhaust, so he was modded. Good kill IMO. He should have ate me at launch but my gearing is tight with that 3.27 and I make torque off idle, and I'm pushing quite a bit more torque than him.

Nice kill, I would be content being able to eat factory rice like that. I won't even attempt to run against anything with an STi or EVO badge in the NA 6. Hope you can get the limp figured out, sounds like you're having a blast so far!
He was slightly modded too
The limp mode thing is going to drive me crazy which is why I am taking a slight break from it. I bought an OEM bosch sensor by the way. Here are the procedures for symptoms:
CAM sensor plugged in, start, drive, limp mode, misfire every cylinder.
CAM sensor plugged in, start, unplug sensor, drive, bad gas mileage and ehh power.
CAM sensor plugged in, start, unplug, TURN OFF CAR, restart (no CAM sensor help), drive, great gas mileage (for having my foot floored

I just hope it's not ECU work. I found some chewed up parts of the harness and that's where I'll start. My dad thinks a continuous short fried an EEprom. I fricken hope not!!!!
You guys need to remember a turbo needs to spool. Evos and Stis only get it from a dig if they are two stepping. Launching flat in one sucks big time. So unless he was banging away I wouldn't put much on the launch. That being said you pulling on him afterwards is quite impressive. Spoken by a former NA owner and now Evo 8 and '10 Ralliart owner.
Hi Josh,
the engine and car runs? That's great news!
Concerning the camshaft position sensor and crankshaft position sensor. If one of them fails the engine immediately stops. So if you have misfire than there has to to be something else wrong.

Markus

If it was a modded STi he must have been the world's worst driver, but a kill is a kill
And for the record, the STi is MUCH faster than the WRX. It would be like comparing an NA and SRT, even though they both have boost, the WRX is rated something like 60-70HP less than the STi and the STi has a very conservative rating. Just saying'

That's the problem, I am unsure what could be wrong. It only misfires when the CAM sensor is plugged in. With it out, no problems at all.

I don't think it was heavily modded or anything but exhaust for sure... Well, I guess it couldve been a catback or a muffler but still that flat 4 sounded amazing.
Yeah, I just meant dig to 60. Supposedly the WRX's have the upper hand from weight or something. Never looked into real world though lol.
Plus with the extra motor weight, subs, but light racing seats incorporated I'm still down 200 lbs or so from the new STi's curb to curb...
A kill is a kill, but next time you come across an STi, you will probably have a rude awakening. A quick look on dragtimes.com shows some interesting 1/4 mile times from the subie guys LMAO
Yes, but if he has any mods at all, he is over 400 WHP and you are probably under 300, especially with those misfires. I hang with a lot of subie guys and drive a bastardized WRX, trust me when I say, with a good driver, a stock STi would give you a good run, modded, there is no chance, they will eat an SRT...

I would love to line up next to one on purpose out of city limits but I don't know anyone with one lol. The guy that I'm going to line up to on purpose is a late 90's camaro SS that is modded pretty good. No idea what he runs or power or anything but we are going to set something up here pretty soon. Other than that there isn't much in my town as far as competition.
So let's talk hypothetical numbers here.
SL500: 255-265 rwhp but bigger drivetrain loss with auto trans .. 4200lbs curb ish... Longer exhaust, but dual... 3.07 rear??... 13.8-14.2 ish ET????
My car: 3200lbs curb ish.... Shorter exhaust but 2-1... Manual so less drivetrain loss... 3.27 rear... closer ratio on the 6-speed vs the 5 right???...
So hypothetically I should still be around 1 second faster ET right? Maybe? lol
Someone who knows this math jump in and give me some thoughts.
