Default Cleaning exhaust tips!

Anyone have any advice on getting my exhaust tips to not looks soo horrible? I have a base cf so mine are not chromed. Is there a good way to clean them or something I should do such as painting them to make them look better? Also does anyone remove them for cleaning?
Thanks,
Josh

Josh, I used steelwool and some strong soap and they cleaned up great on my Limited. I think Brasso may work as well. After I cleaned them, I wasn't thrilled about a black round hole in a nice looking shiney chrome square pipe.

I degreased the inside of the tips, used high temp gloss black spray paint. Then I took a rag with some WD40 on it and wiped off any overspray on the chrome edge. I used gloss black because I wipe them out with spray wax when I wash the car. Flat black may look better, but harder to clean the exaust off of.

Good Luck, James

Thanks a lot james. Looks great. I will be happy if mine end up looking half as good as yours. So are they easy to get off?

It looks like a glossy version of the SRT6 tips.

Good workmanship, James.

Off the topic a bit but someone told me that they watched me drive away and smoke came out of the exhaust. He said he thought that was way sexy. I had no idea it did that.

You can try some Eagle One Nev'r Dull wadding polish. It works great.

You guys are killing me! lol Forced to clean my exhaust tips on my base crossfire, I used an SOS pad. Then there were some spots that wouldn't come off so I took my Dremel with a brush and worked them over again. They look much better but not good enough for the Crossfire Police, I'm sure. lol

Nevr Dull, Meguiar's Hot Rims Mag & Aluminum Polish, Mothers Aluminum Polish...... lots of good stuff on the market that is inexpensive and easy to use. As always, it's much faster and easier to do routine maintenance than it is to fix a badly neglected part, finish, etc.

Mother's mini power ball.
Apply the polish to the inside of the pipes and use the power ball to clean up the pipes quickly.

My tips were filty when I got my car last week. I don't think they have ever been cleaned before. I used Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish and it worked great! It took me about 5 minutes per tip. See the results below.

Today it was raining and I was bored so I decided to clean my tips too. My car is in a dark basement and I see like crap in the dark. First I cleaned them with steel wool. Still black. Broke out the blue nile metal polish. Dang, still looks black to me. Up stairs to get the tripoli, drill and felt tip. That should do the trick. Started polishing and low and behold a shiny spot appears! Uh oh! MINE ARE PAINTED BLACK. Man I hate being blind. So, should I repaint them or strip the paint and shine them up. The shined tips look hot if you ask me.

SRT's are painted black inside. I am toying with the idea of stripping it out and polishing them. I like the clean shiney look.

Any suggestions on the best way to strip off the paint inside the tips? I'm thinking steel wool and thinner. Anyone done this before that can keep me from working harder than necessary?

1st I would double tape and use a cut up plastic trash bag on the bumper and surrounding bumper areas. Any automotive store should sell a decal/paint remover product. Brush or spray. The spray will work just fine because it comes out in a small pattern. You may want to tape off the chrome on the pipes, but if you wipe it off immediately, it shouldn't be a problem.

After about 10 minutes wait, a good product will have the paint wrinkled up and falling off. With latex rubber gloves, wipe out the pipes, even use steel wool at the same time if it is tough. You may even have to apply a second coat to get it all.

I have not stripped my pipes, but plenty other items on other cars.

Good Luck, James

Thanks for the reply James. I would rather not use paint remover, to worried about getting it where I don't want it. But I have to agree that it would work great. We'll see.
By the way, love the defusers. I'm considering them myself but in a chrome color to match my future polished tips. Or perhaps silver to match the windshield surround and strakes. Any thoughts?

I wouldn't have a problem with paint remover. Just be careful. A plastic trash bag works perfect for protection.

As for the difussers, I did mine silver to match the trim on the rest of the car. Someone else will have chime in on chroming plastic. There was a 'plastic chrome' thread last week on the forum, check it out.
