Default How much do you tip the detail guy?

Hello all! I've searched and searched and cant find anything. If I think about it being a service and it's done right, 20% is what you tip. Is that still the standard on someone who is spending 4-6 hours detailing a car? It's about 200$ for the detail, so if I left 250 (depending on how well her does) would that be too much or too little?

I run a detail shop that we do probably 3 details a day around 200 bucks and a 50 for a tip would be great normally a 20 makes us pretty happy

if they do a great job and there is no water dripping from the mirrors or door jams tip 20% of the total bill.

Sure, why not?

People have paid me to detail their car.

Tips are nice and very much appreciated.

I sure would, and I WILL, once winter is over.

I hate cleaning my car.

BTW Mike, knowing absolutely nothing about Auto-Detailing, what do I look for / ask a shop that details to ensure they are competent, etc?

Mike et al, it was intended as a little joke. Certainly not as a jab at an industry that many use. I enjoy doing it myself so much, I poke fun at those who do not enjoy it.

My aplogies if offended.

You know you're one of my heroes! And as for tips, my wife is a cosmetologist (hairdresser). Tips are a big part of life. I'm a good tipper, as my mom taught me well.

I'm pretty sure most people get offended when you just show up.

Simple - ask for references. If he can't or won't give you any, walk away. If he just wants to show you pictures and all the cars are in the shade, walk away. If he's only going to charge you $100 and says he can get rid of the swirls, walk away. If doesn't present himself in a friendly and professional manner, and does not take some time to evaluate the vehicle with you, walk away.

Definitely get references though.

Offended? Not even close, c'mon Max!! There's two kinds of crazy when it comes to car detailing - guys like you who love spending time detailing the car themselves, and guys who gladly part with $300~$500 to have me do it instead!

See, even that doesn't offend me. I don't understand it, but it doesn't offend me!! No, I don't understand it at all.
