Our tips are stainless steel with a polished lip and exterior. Don't believe me? Try to drill a weep hole in it like I did. And you can use 0000 steel wool on it, It won't scratch it. I'd bet 00 won't either.

They're definitely stainless steel alright! I agree, if they're really bad a little 0000 is just fine, even with some WD40 or just in conjunction with a bit of metal polish.

Cool Re: Cleaning exhaust tips

I kept my tips on my Roadster Limited clean from day one. When I purchased the XLR the tips had a little build up on the inside and I used a little bit of Easy Off oven cleaner and they are like brand new.

I've always used the Nevr-Dull wadding polish on chrome or SS exhaust tips. Product has always worked at removing surface contaminants and leaves a great looking shine. Probably do this 2-3x a year.

I use the Turtle Chrome Polish & Rust Remover product on the chrome wheels of my 06 Ford STX Flareside 4x4. Probably need to try it on the XFire's SS exhaust tips. DUH!!!!

I picked my SRT-6 up a week ago. 17,500 miles of accumulated carbon on the exhaust tips. They were black. Twenty minutes with an SOS pad got rid of all the carbon. Thank God they're stainless and not chrome. I'm thinking some Meguiar's NXT 2.0 synthetic polymer wax may stand up to the heat and make cleaning easier in the future.

The inside part of the SRT6 exhaust tips are painted black, the na's are not.

Not any more! It may have been paint but it sure seemed like carbon. I'd expect paint to flake at least a little. This stuff came off with the SOS pad as a black goo. Before I started I could see small patches of stainless. Maybe the paint was weak from the exhaust heat. I like the bare stainless look better with my SSB paint. So, clean it stays.
