Default Devastating News Today

I’m not sure if this is the correct forum. My neighbor called from our other home in Henderson, NV and said that I had a broken sprinkler in my yard and water was shooting up. I called our Gardner to take a look at it and my neighbor went over to open the garage door for him. She called me back and said there was a water leak by my water heater. Ok, it’s just getting better, so I call the Plummer to take a look at the water heater. He calls me and tells me what needs to be done. He then asks me if I know about my Crossfire and I ask “what do you mean”? He tells me a five gallon plastic container of latex paint stored on an overhead shelf cracked, and the latex paint dripped down onto my car. I was so stunned and sick I didn’t think to ask him to take a picture for me. He’ll be back Tuesday so I’ll get one. I’m flying down next Saturday so I’ll be seeing it in person.

The plummer told me “it’s bad” and that the paint has dried. Does anyone have a clue as to what to do? This is a 2004 Crossfire with 13,000 miles on it. The last time I had it in for service, the manager came out and said that it still smells like a new car inside. I am just beyond sick. What a day.

So sorry to hear about what happened. I can really understand what you are feeling. Goo Gone Latex Paint Cleaner may work for you. I've not used it for this purpose. You can research it more and then try it on a small test area first. I would think using something like a bug and tar remover sponge with it would help.

It being latex paint, if you had a good coat of wax on the car - it might just peel off .

I Googled ‘removing latex paint’ and there are a lot of suggestions on it. Good luck.

Thanks. I did too and my head hurts! A lot of people recommending mineral spirits and Goof Off and Goo Gone, etc. Not sure some of those should be used on latex.

You might want to think about contacting your car insurance agent, I would think that it might fall under comprehensive insurance.

Thanks. I think I'll be giving it a try if it doesn't just peal off. (Ha!)

Your house insurance may cover this issue, some time back I was told by an insurance friend of ours some of the things specifically covered by each. It was quite a eye opener as some things I thought would be covered by the car insurance were covered by the house insurance.

I think I would be contacting professional detailers or body shop guys. They have seen this kind of thing before. I now years ago my cousin ran over paint in the road. He did not realize it until it dried. He took it to a body shop and they got it off.

I agree, take it a professional detailer first and they'll advise if the paint can be saved or if its done.

Interior or exterior latex.
Interior would peel off fine, as said before if there was still a coat of wax on it, it should be easier.
The latex shouldn't hurt the oil base .

It must be scary to hear, but once it cleaned off and detailed, shouldn't know a difference.

I have had exterior latex that got alot of over spray on a windy day by a f*&>÷n$ d*[#@[s$ r(#<÷t and I didn't know till it was already dry, but some wd40 and a rag took it off.

I had good luck removing dried white paint from the inner fender well where the previous owner had run through some paint. I tried many things , but the only thing that I had on hand, that would dissolve the paint was some printers blanket wash. What's that? A non oily kerosene/mineral spirits/Naptha mixture is the best way I can describe it. It worked on the painted rocker panel as well. GooGone or GoofOff as previously suggested, will probably work as well.

I think denatured alcohol is the most aggressive thing that will not harm the paint.

This is where it came from. Took all liquids of any kind down from shelf.

After I peeled off the big blob of paint.

After the car wash.

The culprit that started it all.
**Update**

Thanks for all of the input guys. I really lucked out. I flew down to Vegas today and took a look at it. It could have been much worse; one big blob, and a lot then little spots all over the hood and part of the left fender. I have a battery tender hooked up to it so the hood wasn’t closed all the way and have some on the left side edge of the hood. I had to fly back this evening and had a lot of other things to do while down there so I couldn't’ spend as much time as I would have liked.

I was able to loosen an edge of the big blob and it easily came off in one piece. I took a large sponge with hot water in it and soaked the rest of the hood and was able to scrape it off, one piece at a time with my thumbnail. I was afraid to use a brush or abrasive scrubbing sponge. Got most of it off and then took it down to the car wash to see what I still had to deal with. I have some more of the tiny spots left and the side edge of the hood. I feel blessed I was able to get it off with only some elbow grease, and one sore thumbnail. Next time I go down I’ll have it looking good as new. The finish looks unharmed. Whew!
