Default New Headers Arrived

I just received these from Europe and will be installing them next week. Will have to do some mods. to re-locate the 02 sensor and have new pipes made.

How about replacing the camshaft?

It should give your crossfire at least 40 hp!

are these headers originally outfitted for the slk? or are they custom?

hddp i mentioned this before and i don't want to be redundant but just a reminder... the mercedes benz forums have people installing headers... exhaust pipes MUFFLERS and more in their 320s.

they are also installing new crankshaft pulleys as well (kleeman and Linh pulley systems). people there swear by the change...should you go with a pulley change... Linh pulleys offer 24/7 contact for questions and installation assistance... and seems to be the members favorite throughout 4 different forums...

j

since there will be less backup pressure because of the headers... does your chip have to be remapped?

The only racing cam I have found for the car is made by Carlsson and is a ton of money. Even the ones that Kleeman and Renntech sells are the same Carlsson cam.

I'm not sure I get your point ! These are MB racing headers that were designed for the 112 engine.

The jury is still out on the benefit of underdrive pulleys. the COST vs. HP ratio is not really worth it IMO. Especially since the AC compressor is being removed already.

My ECU has already been flashed, but I finally found an engineer in Los Angeles who custom programs MB ECU's for the Grand Am racing teams and is willing to take a look at mine after the headers are installed and I have another dyno done with a printout of the FAM. Speaking of which, he berated the companies who do "cookie cutter" ECU remaps and said it was a total waste of money.

Thanks for letting me pick your brain HDDP...
... no point... really... just an awareness factor for the rest of the members here... not for you but others here @XFF.org. I've been scouring the benz sites for more "tested" knowledge as this forum really is still relatively new and hasn't offered tried tested and true projects for racing, except of course, for you and WOODY. I know you guys have deep knowledge/passion on this XF... so what i see at the other forums, i retain and deposit here.

case in point... at the other forums... their databases go back to the 1990s and your point (he berated the companies who do "cookie cutter" ECU remaps and said it was a total waste of money) has been an issue/myth with the SLK folks as well... they are also (and have been since the late 1990s) questioning UPSOLUTE/EU & UPSOLUTE/USA and the rest of that industry... for their un-substantiated claims.

in re: to the underdrive pulleys... the SLK folks are claiming 35- 55 HP...
but since the removal of the A/c compressor... less drain of power and a little weight loss... are u removing the A/C condenser and the rest of the system too?

"engineer in Los Angeles who custom programs MB ECU's for the Grand Am racing teams"... can't get better than that... nice!

also http://www.kleemannusa.com/ is an excellent site for XF owners to browse ...they also sell KOPMPRESSOR SYSTEMS for our stock 112 (320) engines.

I believe the cams that Renntech and the others use are made by Schrick, may be able to save some money finding a reseller. Also I remember HDDP at some point you was looking for a new rear Differential and I noticed that evosport is offering custom ones, something you may want to check out.

i once attached a post to an mb group buy for the shrick cams, $2,000 dollars, they add 25 hp at the wheels, and no one was into it...looks like a great cost to hp value now, plus probably sounds kick ***...

Any chance you can have those headers copied and sell them to us cheap?

I'll take a look to see what they offer, I did some prelim. research and I couldn't find an application for our car (112 motor). I e-mailed Turner Motorsports who is the Schrick master distributor for some info. I do know they offer four different lobe angles for the BMW & VW but not sure what they have for the MB engine.

Let me make sure they work first. I'm still waiting on the gaskets to arrive (2 weeks on order from Germany) Then I'll have to take a look at how to relocate the front 02 sensors (which are installed into the OEM header). I still need to see if I can install the headers without dropping the engine. Then when that's done, I will have to get the new pipes made to fit the new headers. AND THEN make sure I'm not throwing all kinds of funky codes with the FMU ECU BUGABOO !!!

In other words guys... This is going to take awhile, so don't hold your breath...

May idle a bit rougher but your right the price to hp value is pretty good after you see the prices of everything else.

Found this on the MBForums http://forums.mbworld.org/forums/sho...ghlight=shrick , someone is doing an engine swap in there C320 coupe (same engine as ours). Anyways if you read the thread you'll find some info about custom headers being made. Maybe something worth looking into as the cost he has listed for them is under $1,200.

Thanks for the info. My headers are the original Super Sprint headers with some custom factory changes in the bends to work on the Crossfire.

I posted a note to get contact info for this JOSH guy at House Of Power to get more info on the schrick cams and valve springs.

This is probably a very silly question, feel free to say so if it is. If someone had access to a good CNC metal shop, the kind you'd need to make gun parts and such, wouldn't it be possible to make custom cams and such? What brought this to mind is the idea of making custom lower and upper receivers for AR-15 rifles.

...also speaking of MBworld, there is BENZworld and SLK32 forums...

HDDP over at the other forums they had one member who had downpipes made for his custom headers... but to keep costs down he made a deal with the shop (germany) to retain the plans (pattern) of the pipes so that other members can purchase the down pipes... in the end the downpipes were free as he became sponsored by the shop... maybe you can pitch this idea to them as well???

i am sure you are setting a trend here for the XF community so they may take the offer. ...just an idea.

ATRIUS... did you say guns??? heheheheh.

in that slk forum they talk of headers made out of mild steel, ceramic coated, for $1,150... not bad, not good... just better than what we have heard thus far... mild steel will react better to heat cycling since it does not expand wildly like stainless... however, the cost for a mild steel header, even if it is ceramic coated, should be around 800 - 900... production cost is very low to have mild steel flanges cut as it does not clog the equipment like aluminum and is not as hard to work with like stainless... welding mild steel is much cheaper as well... this makes me miss the great shops that where available to my old neon community where parts where cheap and plentiful.
