Default Magnaflow install

Put on my Magnaflow catback last night, great exhaust, a little boomy at 2,200 to 2,700 rpm's, but it needs to break in...BUT:

Those ^$*#% rubber mounts at the rear of the muffler **** me off. Hell of a time getting the old exhaust off, then on the Mag the passenger side ("lower" of the two) mount makes it almost impossible to get the rubber piece in between the hook and the pipes. So of course both mounts came off on the first test drive !!! I have the drivers side on, and wired so it cannot come loose, but need some help here - any others have the same problem ???

Thanks,
Tazz

I used a "muffler hanger tool" to manipulate the rubber loops and pull 'em off the stock piece and stretch and wrestle them onto the hangers on the Magnaflow mufflers. Looks like a screwdriver handle with a shaft with a looping hook on the end. I borrowed one from a buddy but I think NAPA has 'em for about $12 - $15 bucks.

Default WD40 and plastic/rubber parts

I'd use a rubber /plastic compatible lube. WD40 is good for rusty bolts but it has solvents which will attack rubber and plastic parts. A buddy of mine had an old Ford with a creaky/squeaky front end. He started squirting WD40 on the suspension bushings every month. The squeaking stopped as the old bushings swelled under attack from the solvents but about six months later the car was all over the road because the bushings had totally disintegrated and fallen out!

i had my magnaflow put on yesterday. it sounds great. the hangers didn't give us any problems even though i thank its kind of weird that's all that holds them on. where the mags bolt on i had the guy put a couple of weld spots there. he only charged me $50 bucks to install so it was worth it to me.

I just installed the system on our car last night, same problems with rear rubbers. I have been wrenching over 30 years and have seen a lot worse. I ended up taking some large brazing rod (won't rust), bend into a hook on one end, get your correct measurement, cut, bend the other end into another hook. Installed it holds the two rubbers together so they won't slip off the ends of the muffler hangers.
I also have the same problem with it resonanting at 2000-2500 RPM. Stopped by the local muffler shop, he said he could install a 12" stainless glasspack to get rid of the problem.
Does anyone else have other ideas for solving this common problem??
I also called Magnaflow, they said that I am the only complaint they have had on the 16633 system. They had no suggestions either.

Be Safe---Stimey

i went to the parts store bought 2 regular old donut exhuast hangers no problem getting them on and used a 2 stainless steel wire ties for header wrap to pull them towards one another, i know your pain man i did mine myself and it sucked but changing the hangers to the regular circle style helped a huge ammount and the header wrap ties havent broken yet and its been 5k miles since the passenger side has fallen off lol oh and make sure that the clamp is on properly if its loose it will allow the system to rotate i wrenched the hell out of mine with a breaker bar before i got it tight enough now no issues! last thing it mellows out after few few hard runs ask the guys at the dragon how mine sounded, no glass packs needed!

I have some of the Boom/resonance issues in my coupe but it has gotten better with time. The Magnaflow was kinda "raspy" when first installed but it has mellowed with time (approx 4-5K miles). The hatch back structure of the coupe is part of the resonance problem. An extra resonator will help some but you may want to try some dyna-mat or similar acoustic treatment under the cargo area carpet. That open area acts as a acoustic "bass trap" and amplifies that particular frequency. This is a common problem with hatchback coupes in general. There is also some leeway in how far the back half of the Magnaflow system slides onto the middle pipe. I pushed mine back as far as possible. This makes the rubber "donuts" tighter, gets the hot gas and noise out from under the car and away from the bumper fascia (see pix in my gallery) On my car the tips protrude from the opening by a little over an inch. There is a downside; you can burn your ankles on the hot pipes when getting into the hatch. I keep a big towel back there and drape it over the rear when loading/unloading to prevent burning my ankles or scratching up the paint.

To be honest...I'd use hairspray...usually "aqua-net".

It's the same thing I use to install handgrips on cycles...slippery when wet...but dries up and helps provide a little bond.

What i did when i installed my magnaflow was to bend the hanger to get the rubber mount on then i put a washer on each hanger and welded them on. afterwards i bent the hangers as far back as i could and trust me i will never get that exhaust off again.

And it is just about perfectly level, but i had the same problem with the pass. side falling off every other day. it gets old.

Just not any more.

Have your wife cut out a piece of 3" foam that will fit the floor, snuggly, of the luggage area, get her to cover the foam with a nice, contrasting material that will look and wear well in that area. You place on top of the carpeted area and it will help protect the carpet as well.
You will find that it will help insulate and absorb the sound that comes from the rear.
I also put a slice of doll stuffing (it is white and almost looks like furnace filter material) under the carpet and over the storage compartment for additional absorption.

I don't have the Magna-Flow system but understand your issue.

I used some Vasoline, and had a female friend with smaller hands slide the "doughnuts" on (nothing like hearing a gal say "Whoa, we need to use some more Valoline..."). For now I tied the two doughnuts together with a real heavy-duty ziptie, will use a stainless bolt/nylock nut/wahers combo as a permanent tie.

The booming got a little beter with time, the ecu upgrade and higher octane full changed the sound a lot !!!
