Question anybody with alternator experience HELP!!!

Hello everybody, I am having a decent current draw, now that I have added an aftermarket headunit (don't think that has much to do with it), and a JL HD750/1 amp. I have never had to mess with alternators, but it seems like mine won't keep up with the current draw from my amp. I tried posting in the stereo section, with little help. I tried hid's which were suggested to help, now I have strobe lights. I tried a yellow top battery, helps with sound, but not with the lights. I measured the voltages before the better battery, and it was as follows: at rest, 12.4v, when started 14.4v, and when the system was hitting dropped below 12v's. I was using an analog meter while doing these tests, so I don't know how far below 12v's it dropped, but it was like a spike, too fast to read. Could my alternator be getting weak, or going out? Any help is greatly apreciated, thanks chris

What kind of current are you using, I mean how many amps. If it is over 60 Ill bet that you are in a downward spiral, that is 750 watts in round numbers and if you want that youll need a bigger battery, like one more in parallel.

The alternator has a rating that splinter probably has on his tongue but over 60 will cause too much droop in the wiring and leave precious little for lights and ignition.

I have the smaller 600 watt 4 channel JL HD amp and even it can start to tax the electrical system. You've bought a really efficient amp, but it still draws quite a bit when driven hard. An extra battery will only put a greater load on your alternator. It would allow for more reserve playing time with your car off only. Anytime your voltage is much below 13-14 volts, you are not keeping up with your current demands. Generally if left unaddressed the problem will worsen. You won't hurt the JL amps regulated power supply, but you can hurt your alternator and or battery. Unfortunately I don't know offhand of any high output alternators for this car. You can always just pound the system for a few minutes at a time, turning down the volume at intervals. You can try searching for Iraggi Alternators as a possibility for high performance rebuilding. He has built many for very serious spl competitors. I have one of his on our Grand Marquis which puts out 200 amps max. and 175 amps at idle. This is very important as many aftermarket "high output" alternators put out less current than stock at idle in order to make their max. power.

yup, purchase the alternator from Rockauto.com cost is under $150 for rebuilt unit, if your planning on a adding serious electronic accesories then get the ML320 4x4 alt.

oh and stay away from the French units that come with the car the bearing and electronic components are shiit, get the MBZ unit it's made in England and has a better regulator and bearings.

I pulled my right from wheel out and disconnect the wiring and bolt. remove from above or below, it's a 4 hr job for the inexperienced.

what do I need to search for exactly? I tried finding the alternator at rock auto, and couldn't find the one mentioned above. And as far as install, just remove the tire, and you can access all bolts easily. I assume there is enough room to remove it from either direction? I still have the factory battery, sitting in the garage, but I didn't wan't to run two batteries. Thanks for the help so far on this matter. Any idea how much wire I would need to rerun the wires from battery to alternator, and engine to ground? If I'm going to get this envolved, I might as well finish the big three upgrade. thanks again chris

how old was that listing? A little bit more than I expected to pay. That extra amperage won't mess with anything will it? thanks, chris

i spoke to him just couple days ago i am still trying to verify it will bolt up with no issues. It would not help you much at idle as i think idle amperage will be around 100-120 amp. I am not sure what the stock puts out at idle as it is 120amp probably at a higher rpm where the high output will put out around 180-260. If the stock only puts out around 80amp at idle and the high output puts out 120 at idle and 200 at higher rpm than an alt will help you out. the extra amperage will not hurt your car but make sure you replace all your wires with 4agu or 2 agu if you are gonna go with a high output alternator.

If I can find and get one, it will definately help. It isn't at idle that I'm worried about, it is when I'm going 50 mph, and the headlights are dancing to the beat that concerns me. I'm definately drawing more current that the stock one can supply. Unless my eyes are vibrating with the beat, which I doubt. Please let me know what you find out. chris

this is the specs he gave me for idle amp and high output amp. I like 240amp/140amp as i feel it gives a good mix of idle amperage and high output which should take care of the additional power to feed the amps.

Anyone interested in a group buy we would need 3 people to commit and be able to get a 10% discount.

180/130 $399
200/140 $419
220/150 $439
240/140 $459
260/130 $479
