Default When will the clutch die?

Hi,
My manual Crossfire has now done 70,000 miles on the same clutch. Does anyone know what the average life of a clutch on a Crossfire is?
Thanks,
Adam

there is no such thing as average clutch life. It depends on how you drive the car.

I did 135,000 on a 1984 BMW 318i and 165,000 on a 1974 Dodge Colt GT (Mitsubishi Lancer). Does that have any correlation to how long your clutch will last? Nope.

Anyone have a clutch die under 50K? Besides people who track it.

I used to wear them out way too often on my turbo Z. I finally bought a new clutch and took it to these guys in Irwindale (CA) and they put ceramic pads on both sides of the disc. Well, that was way too jerky. I went back to these guys after a while and they put ceramic on one side only. That was perfect and my clutch never slipped again. Just a little food for thought if you're replacing your clutch.

First, I love your new sig,

I put three clutches in my Olds Starfire in 30K miles. Had one special built from a Corvette assy and pressure plate. went over 200M using the same driver and often pulling a trailer.

Beefy clutches exist. As far as I know, the Crossfire has one. I would assume at least 100K.

Unless you are pulling a trailer.

Thanks Franc, I thought that up one night when I had way too much to drink and was combing through my three decade old phone book desperately looking for someone to talk to (preferably female)

I'm also curious. I have just under 19,000 miles on mine, and sometimes I smell burning clutch. Of course I auto-x and have preloaded the thing at least 5 times doing that at about 3500 rpm.

Also, a dumb idea, but this is the first manual car I've owned. The car I learned to drive manual on also. It was driven before me from florida to Illinois by my grandfather who knows how to drive a stick, but after that, it was all on me.

Please tell me my clutch isn't going to go soon.

Anyone know how much it is to replace one on these cars?

I don't know for sure but $2,500* ($ 10K) has been batted around before. Scary. Might make you consider those burnouts again.

That burning may also be from you traction control. If you leave it on during burnouts, you will get the brakes working and can smell them for sure. I just worked up the driveway in deep snow and could smell the brake pads from the operation of the TC.

Just my two cents.

would be nice to know the cost so I can start a special piggy bank for it.

Whaaat! $10k? Where did that number come from?

Granted, I haven't kept up with this subject since I don't have a manual. But at that price and the rate the $ of these cars are falling, it would be cheaper to buy another xfire.

Imagine that, disposable Crossfires.

$2,500?

Correct me if I'm wrong, which I probably am, but if say I burn out my clutch, won't they just have to replace the friction plate?

I think I saw it somewhere online (in a weak search for an answer to this question) for about $185 for a friction plate.

You can just replace the friction plate. Plan on going back in very soon.

Replace the plate, the throwout bearing and resurface the pressure plate.
Dealers want $2,500 'cause they job some of this out and, it is a Benz, not a Chevy Cobalt.

You are not tossing a new set of brake pads in. I haven't been under there myself but; Split drive shaft has to be pulled, carrier bearing, Tranny down and out. Hydraulics capped off and then bled for reconnection.

Like I said, it ain't a Chevy.

Interesting, after seeing this number, it makes me think that the $2,500 estimate is pretty far off. I spoke to the custom race shop that has done some work for me here in Indianapolis and they said labor on an XF clutch would be approximately $250. He got this from some clutch and tranny software estimating software he uses so I am sure it can't be too far off. Just thinking out loud...

Yeah $2500 is a bit much. (at least double of what is should be for a disc, plate, and bearing + install)
Now if you also replace the bearing there is another $300.
The list price for the pressure plate and disc is $583 - discounted to $422.29
If you need the the release bearing (always a good idea) list is $310 discount $223.85

Excellent info, thanks a lot. I am asuuming this is the stock setup....

Has anyone had any luck with finding (or running) a beefier aftermarket setup?
