Default Good, Inexpensive OEM Fleece Oil Filter

I went to Advance Auto Today, and found something interesting.
The Purolator L25277 filter is a repackaged Mann HU718/5 fleece filter.
They are not even trying to disguise the filter. It is the Mann filter with O rings in a Purolator Box.
Best of all, the price was $11.49 each (plus tax).
Not a bad deal.
Don't get the L25276 filter - It is a paper Chinese version of the filter.
The box is unsealed, so you can look before you buy.
Happy Hunting

I'm wondering if this is a discontinued oil filter, as I'm only seeing the paper version at the Advance Auto website, and also on the Purolator website. Has anyone located an online source for this filter?

Thanks

I noticed the same thing at Advance recently. They carry the "PureOne" premium fleece filter but it is not referenced in the filter application catalog in the store for the Crossfire or for 3.2l Mercedes vehicles. Only the L25276 paper filter is listed in the catalog. So the average guy going into Advance and looking up the filter for his Crossfire will not see the fleece version unless he peeks into the box sitting next to the recommended paper L25276.

FYI... In 2005 Bosch and Mann-Hummel entered a joint venture. Later they purchased the Purolator filter business.

This is really great info! I'm going to check out Pep Boys on the way home & see if they have the Purolator L25277 version.

By the way, if you look up the Fram filter (CH8481) and then check the cross reference listing for equivalents, the Purolator L25277 is shown right after the L25276 version.

So I went by Pep Boys and sure enough, they had 2 of the Purolator L25277 oil filters on the shelf. And they still have them at $28.49 each!

Then I stopped at Advance Auto near my house and they had 2 of the L25277 filters on their shelf. And they still have them at $30.99 each - Pep Boys ended up being a bargain!

Anyway, I've got 3 of the NAPA gold versions (at $10 & change) and that will probably last me 5-6 years, at the rate I put on mileage.

Later,

I don't get the difference in prices between the stores. They all use the same central computer system.
My copy of the sales slip is in the photo, so I was not dreaming about the price.
Just for jollies, i'm stopping at another Advance Auto Parts Store in town, and see if I can get those filters as part of the Castrol oil / Purolator Filter promotion they are running. 5 quarts of oil and a Puralator filter for a combo price.
I'll let you know. Although I too have enough oil and filters downstairs to last me quite a while. I was worried that Mobil 1 0-W40 was going to disappear, so I really stocked up on the last Mobil 1 sale. Just can't resist a great deal.. Probably a better investment than a CD now.

One thing I did notice was that Pep Boys didn't have any Mobil 1 0w40 on the shelf and it was the only place I could find it before around here. But they had more than an ample supply of 5w40, which is the grade M-B switched to on its MY07 & newer models.

According to the attached, we should be able to use this grade in the XFires w/o impacting performance and/or warranties.

Mystery solved.

Go into the store. Ignore the price tag on the shelf. Open box and make sure that it is the fleece filter with Mann stamped on it.

Take it to the counter and ask for a price check.

It will come up at $11.49.

Buy both in the store. Normal inventory is 2. Don't say anything about the shelf price being different.

And, yes, it is not in their web site, or computer as being the correct filter, it just shows the crappy paper element filter.

Wait, and repeat.

I've done it twice.

Again, happy hunting.

Thanks for the info: I just purchased 2 Purolator L25277 filters from Advance Auto for $11.49 each and Mobil 1, 0-40 from Walmart for a 5 qt container for $22.00 and 3 1qt containers for $5.99 each. Does aynone know where I can purchase an extra oil filter cap assembly for quick and easy oil changes? I can't find it listed on any company's auto parts list. The Mercedes dealer here in Fort Washington, PA will not service a Crossfire. The service manager said he could not bring up anything about the Crossfire on his service computer.

Tell him to look up the R170 chassis SLK32 AMG.....for the SRT6 or the 320 for the NA.

I didn't think that Mobil 1 0W-40 was produced for Walmart in 5 quart containers. There's even a FAQ on the Mobil 1 site that states they have no plans to package 0W-40 in 5qts for Walmart. This would be a great deal for Crossfire owners to be able to buy the big jugs since it is < $5 a qt. Anyone else see Mobil 1 5qt 0W-40 at their local Walmart?

I've been buying this 5 qt container of Mobil 1 - 0-40 wt oil from Walmart for about 4 years now. I purchased it before for my 1998 MB SLK230 I previously owned before the sophisticated hydraulic system blew. I got rid of the car because it was too expensive to repair. It only had 50,000 miles on it. I also leased a 2002 BMW 330xi and a 1999 BMW Z3 that used the same oil and they recommended 12,000 mile changes on both cars. The BMW dealers changed the oil on the BMW's free of charge every year. The state inspections were also free. I only averaged about 6,000 miles a year for 3 years each. I was never able to purchase the MB SLK230 oil filters from any local auto store.

I'm not sure if item #20 at OE Discount Parts is what you're looking for. It appears to be the oil filter housing, minus the element, for $61.80. As a Mercedes part, it costs less, $33.00. See item #9 at OE Discount Parts
