Default CAB Module / ABS Pump

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone here has ever changed their CAB module or ABS pump and what the easiest way to do this is.

The CAB is held on to the pump with 4 torx screws, but I can't get to one of them, because there is not enough room between the fuse box and the screw head to undo it.

Not sure if there is a way to "move" the fuse box out of the way to reach the pesky screw or if the easiest way is to remove the whole pump.

Any advice would be most appreciated, I hope to attempt this next weekend.

Regards

AR

I'd recommend removing the entire unit. Make sure you mark what goes where so when you reconnect everything, they are in the right spot. Also, make sure it's really clean before you remove the lines so you don't end up with dirt trapped in the system.

Thanks rcompart, you obviously have had good experience in removing these parts, I'm a little stuck on how to remove the whole unit.

I can see that there are 3 lugs that protrude out into the wheel well that hold the pump in place - but how are these secured? There are no nuts or bolts!

Also, will I have to bleed the brakes once I re-install the pump with the new CAB?

Thanks for your help

It's held in there with rubber isolators. Just disconnect everything and pretty much tug it up and out of the car.

I'd recommend doing it in this order:

1) Clean the area VERY well with an alcohol prep pad or something similar and let dry. Ensure you get ALL the dirt off as any contamination of this can cause problems in the future.

2) Mark all lines going into the ABS controller so you know where to put them when you go to reinstall it. Easiest way to do this is wrap a little blue painters tape around each one and number 1,2,3,4,5 and 6. Then make a little diagram of it indicating the front of the car and then note the location of each numbered line.

3) Remove all the lines and cap off both the lines and the ABS controller with something to prevent dirt from entering the lines or the controller. Usually you can find caps or plugs at a hardware store. Pick up a few different sizes as I don't know exactly what size you'll need. Clean up any spilled brake fluid with a clean rag.

4) Remove the electrical connector from the ABS controller, place end in a bag and use a zip tie or rubber band to close around it. The part about cleaning up all the brake fluid in the last step will keep it from getting into the connector this step.

5) Lift up on the ABS controller rocking it slightly front to back and side to side until it comes out of the holes. It may pull the rubber isolators with it or they may be left in the car. Make sure you keep them as I don't know if they will come with the new unit.

When you go to put it back in, just do the reverse of the above steps. You will need to bleed the brakes and it will not be fun but just take your time and have plenty of fluid so you can continuously top off the master cylinder. If it gets too low, you'll have to redo all the bleeding so be sure to never let it get below the max line and you'll be fine.

Good luck and take care.

Thank you for your comprehensive reply, I really appreciate the advice and the time taken out of your day!

I have no experience with these rubber isolators, do they require a special tool to remove/replace?

Thank you very much once again - I aim to dedicate most of next weekend to this so I will let you know how I get on!

Regards

A very grateful AR!

No special tools required to remove the isolators. Just some brute force. They pop right back in as well. If don't just pop back in, you may have to force them in a little. They'll go in though so you shouldn't be worried about that.

Lube 'em up a bit - for something like this I would use some ArmorAll or equivalent. Won't harm rubber, vinyl, plastic or paint and makes these parts slick so they slide right back together. Works well on vacuum lines too.
