Default Need Help Tranny problems.

Hello to all that read this I hope the New Year is treating you well.

I have an 05 SRT-6 with 33,000 miles on it. The car has developed the stuc in gear symptom(limp mode) it has 2 fault codes stored p0715 and p0738.
Ive researched what I can on this site and believe I have an issue with my "Electric plate" I believe its called. the dealer is trying to charge me $1750.00 for parts and labor saying they have to remove transmission valve body to access the speed sensor in the transmission. they say its $900 in parts alone.

Is anyone aware of a good independant shop I can repair my car at in the Orange Co CA area?

Any help provided will be much appreciated

Rip off!
These 'electrical plates' cost about $200 max for non OEM parts. I had one go, the car went into limp mode and the car was fixed under warranty, they rebuilt or replaced a solenoid. I'm sure that if it was not a warranty job they would have sold me a new one. The solenoids (6) on top cost about $20 each and are replaceable, they probabbly are selling you the whole lot, plate, solenoids and speed sensor etc.

No big deal, they will remove the valve body as it is mounted on the inside face of it.

Come on guys, this guy asks "Is anyone aware of a good independant shop I can repair my car at in the Orange Co CA area?" Lets give this guy some shops to minimize the repair! I am sure someone knows a lower priced shop!

I think it would be a good idea to check the transmission plug for oil leaking and the condition of the connections at the TCM.

Sorry, I can't help you with locating a good repair facility (I'm on the other coast) but I do believe at minimum if you ask exactly what parts are needed you can go get them alot cheaper, bring them in and have them put them in and just charge you the labor. I'm sure you'll say hundreds by doing this. Mine went just after my tranny connector went (I think the dealer screwed it up when they were working on it. Luckily it was under warranty. Once dealer told me it would be 2400 for the connector and the entire valve body unit including labor. Another actually took the time to see my vehcile was under warranty and it was done for zero dollars (however it took them twice to get it right).

At your mileage, I'd suggest getting the parts on line, saving about 3-500 dollars and then going somewhere with reasonable labor -- but that knows what they are doing.

Good luck.

Agreed. Get the parts yourself then ask around locally for a good mechanic.
ANY good mechanic can do this repair (heck, I even did my own!).
  • Drop the trans pan.
  • Drop the valve body after disconnecting the electrical connecter (front passenger side)
  • Plate is between valve body and transmission.
  • Replace plate.
  • Button everything back up.

Good idea to capture all of the fluid you can so you have an idea how much to put back in cuz there ain't no dipstick!

NOTE: I would also replace the above mentioned electrical connecter o-rings while I was doing this repair.

Seems like I need one of these plates too. My car has gone to limp mode a few times, got scanned and been told I need a new input plate which has the speed an temp sensor (I guess this is it).

tighed1, I saw other of your posts when you give the link to the plate:

Mercedes Benz Transmission Conductor Plate 1402701161 - Volkstoy Motorsports

I just wanted to ask if this plate works for all Crossfire models or are year/model specific, since the website only mentions Mercedes models.

I'd really like to get the piece on my own since at the workshop they want around $500 for the plate.

You've got more miles on your car than we do on ours!

I may be cynical but I had a limp mode in my 300 which has basically the same transmission, the NAG1.
Mine was under warranty so they changed a valve or solenoid on the plate. I am sure if I was footing the bill they would have told me I needed a whole new plate. There are two assemblies which look like one, both do not need to be replaced so watch they do not try that trick. They are simply called the valve plate and the electrical plate, I think yours is the electrical plate.

Well the scan showed the fault was the speed input sensor (or something like that), but that I need to replace the whole plate which also includes the oil temperature sensor. The guy said the plate was separate from the solenoids and that those were ok. He never mentioned anything about valve plate (which by the way I don't know what it is or what it does ) but did mention a harness .

The valve plate is the solenoid plate.
Here is a picture of the two together, the electrical plate is the top part and has the red marks on it. It is the matte silver assembly with the black electrical connector sticking out the bottom right hand side with the white plastic cover on the top right side. It may not be exactly like ours but is from a NAG1 transmission, I've forgotten where I got it from.

Thank you onehundred80, it's clearer to me now. Well seems like I just need the electronic plate, I hope a new one solves the problem. I'm anxious tho floor the pedal

By the way do you know if the plate in the link I posted works for all Crossfires (at least the non-SRT6)? Because the guy said it was a different one between pre-2004 and the ones used in the 2005 and later models.

Yesterday I got the plate replaced. I bought it on ebay from the last link I posted, and at the workshop they charged about $120 for the labor. All solved for less than 300 bucks.

No more LIMP HOME mode, the car is more responsive and the shifting is so smooth I can't believe it.

Hard to say, but if you just had transmission serviced and connector replaced, it sounds like it may be related. Maybe there wasn't enough fluid put back in the tranny. Possibly when the connector was replaced it wasn't attached properly. If could be a bad plate but if you weren't having problems before they are likely are result of the recent work.

Check the connection to the connector. Make sure they isn't a resulting leak from the previous work. Check the fluid level carfully. Beyone that, seems like you'll have to go to an expert.

My bet is on not enough fluid, or the wrong type of fluid.

Good luck.
