Default Stuttering between 1500-2000 Fuel pump?

Hey All

I'm more or a lurker on this site, and it has helped me out so much in the past, but now i need to ask a question of my own!

I have a problem with the XF where it stutters between 1500 and 2000 RPM. I am pretty sure its the fuel pump/filter. My questions are;

Is there a pump and filter, or is it just one part? (dumb question, just wanted to check)

Which is a good replacement, is there a decent aftermarket or is OE the best way to go?

Many thanks!

John

2 parts.
You can get both from Needswings, send a PM to Rob, tell him N/A or SRT6 and he'll give you a quote.

Nothing wrong with replacing both. But I wonder if it is the throttle lag you are describing. Have you ever done a throttle reset? Throttle position sensors can cause this as well. A throttle reset only takes a few minutes. No harm in trying.

Hi there, yes tried the throttle reset and it didn't help, the reason i'm thinking its the pump is because on turning the key, the pump is very loud and just doesn't sound right!

If it was fuel problems would you not expect problems when the demand for fuel was at its highest? Which would be higher revs and higher load.

Well it wouldn't hurt to replace pump and the filter since they are both right there.

Just curious (and kind of thinking out loud here) but does the "stutter" between 1500 and 2000 RPMs happen all of the time or just when the engine is cold? Also, does it stutter when revving in park or only when you have it in gear? Not knowing if the OP has an N/A or and SRT, could the stutter he feels at highway speeds be the S/C kicking in and out (if it's an SRT)? I only ask these questions because my SRT has a stutter or hesitation when the engine is cold but it goes away after about 5 to 10 minutes of driving. It also only happens when in gear - revving in park it is smooth as silk. I've never really investigated it because it goes away so quickly, but I would hate for the OP to start throwing money at something that is not needed.

For you that could be the early signs of crankshaft position sensor. Usually shows it ugly head on 1st startup

I have a "stutter" in mine as well. It is very noticeable if you are flat cruising under light throttle and hit a bump. After the bump it will feel like it slightly misfires for a couple seconds then is back to normal. If you floor it during the stutter it takes off like nothing is wrong. One time it had a big misfire/ stutter and the check engine light flashed for a second then went out and was fine for the rest of the drive. There aren't any stored codes. Is this similar to your problem Minster?

Mine is a N/A 6 speed with 82000 miles. It has a new CPS (not a Bosch, however). I have not inspected the RCM yet, but that will come while it's down for the winter. What would be a likely culprit? Fuel filter, Bad RCM solder joint, ....?

Bad connection somewhere. This will be quite hard to trace as it is the nature of intermittent connection problems are the bane of any competent troubleshooter. Most just throw parts at it until they either give up, get sued, or magically fix it by process of elimination!

I've been having this same issue. I will be cruising with light throttle between 35 and 50 and every couple of seconds the car will stutter and then drive normal for maybe a minute, they act up for a few more seconds. Was this ever resolved? I have a spare Crankshaft sensor on hand so I will try replacing that today.

I had the RCM repaired. Found 23 bad solder joints (i posted pics of the bad joints in the RCM repair thread). That wasn't the cause of the stutter though. I replaced the CPS again (this time with a Bosch). It seemed to run well, but I sold the cars soon after so I'm not sure of the longer term repair.
