Default Received really bad advice!

I thought I'd post this as I know that it was extremely poor advice.

I had stopped in at the local autozone to purchace motor oil (Mobil 1 0w-40), oil filter and cabin filter. Everything was going fine and the worst advice I had ever heard from the cashier that was ringing up my purchase told me that I should only wory about changing the oil filter as the oil was pretty much good for the life of the vehicle.

Myself knowing that regardless the oil is full synthetic, it will still break down over time due to the extreme temps the engine puts it through, that eventually if I were to do as he suggested I'd be sitting on the side of the road one day calling the dealer to locate a replacement engine and possibly exhaust components to boot.

I hope that no one would ever take this type of advice from anyone, regardless of how convincing the person may be.

If they knew anything about engines would she be ringing up parts? Once in a great while you find someone in a parts store that
Has been a mechanic but not often. My son sells parts for crop dusters but doesn't fly. LOL.

Or tires! They told me turn them inside-out every 10K and they were good for life!

Wow glad I keep changing the summer air out for the winter air in my tires and lube the chrome reverse muffler bearings every 5k miles or I might need to change my oil as well. Oh yea the spark plugs are lifetime parts as well!

LOL, Ya'll are a riot.

But seriously, I thought I'd post this because I had read a previous post a while back that someone's spouse had taught her to strain the oil through a coffee filter when they changed the oil. I couldn't believe that either.
But what ever "perks" their engine....(pun intended)

You wait long enough on those plugs they will be lifetime, either they won't come out or thats how long it will take to get them out!

Don't forget to clean out your engine every 50,000 miles by draining the oil, filling her up with H2O from the spigot, and running her for a few minutes to make sure everything's fresh before putting in the new oil.

DO NOT DO THIS. Just wanted to be clear.

Yeah your screwed, you forgot to add the New Dawn dishwashing liquid! It cleans all the old oil out of every nook n cranny. One bottle per 2 gallons of water and run it at about 3500 rpm until it shuts down. No more problems with your engine!

Naw, I can only help one member at a time... Right now I'm helping a member check/change his halogen fluid. Your engine would be number 1287 on my list. My list got much larger after my advice on cleaning your internals. It was a different set of circumstances involved (seems someone key-worded on internals, maybe) but I got a flood of emails on how to cleanse (internals) and I have to refrain from using Mobile 0W-40 in a enema bag... Such is life, but I do love helping people (NOT WITH THE ENEMA BAG THING THOUGH THATS SELF HELP ONLY).

Just my .02

A co-worker of mine briefly talked about changing oil in his motorcycle. One day he got curious because he heard the same information. I believe he went here:

Oil Analyzers, Inc. - Oil Analysis, Oil Testing Services

He received the kit, took the samples over time and had them analyzed. According to him; the "effectiveness" of the oil did not change significantly. Now, this is second hand information, but I myself have been quite curious about this as well.

I'm not saying oil doesn't need to be changed, nor could I ignore the significance of dirt/grit/particle collection that takes place in oil. It could be worth trying out and see what you come up with.

Just remember though, if your one of the lucky ones who have the LPW (lifetime powertrain warranty), you have to show the oil was changed according to the maintenance schedule in the manual or your 'out there' at the mercy of the person fixing anything related to what is covered!

Nahh, I'll do my gambling at the tables, but for what it's worth I went to the Mobil 1 site and found this:

Why do you have to change your motor oil on a regular basis?Motor oil breaks down over time. When it breaks down, it loses its effectiveness and can no longer properly protect your engine.

In addition to lubricating an engine's moving parts, motor oil is designed to carry combustion by-products away from the pistons and cylinders. It is designed to deal with the small amounts of water that form as the engine heats and cools, and to collect the dirt and dust that enter the engine through the air-intake system. It also handles acids that are formed by the reaction between water and other contaminants. Sometimes there are even fuel leaks (fuel dilution) or coolant leaks that get into the oil system.

As a car is driven, the level of contamination in the motor oil constantly increases. The oil filter removes particles as the oil passes through the filter, but over time an oil's additives are used up and the oil itself can start to degrade (oxidize or thicken). At that point, the oil can no longer do its job and must be changed.

The rate at which contamination and additive depletion occurs depends on many variables. One of these is driving conditions, which vary greatly and have a direct effect on the useful life of the oil. Other factors include the precision of ignition, fuel injection or carburetion adjustments, air cleaner service and the general mechanical condition of the engine.

Oil should be changed before the contamination level reaches the point where engine damage can result. Because it is difficult for the individual motorist to determine when the contamination level is too high, automobile manufacturers provide recommended oil change intervals. These change recommendations vary by model year and manufacturer. Recommended intervals and mileage limits also vary with the type of service under which a car operates. More frequent oil changes are recommended for severe service.

Here's the direct link to the above:

Haha; save me a seat

I'm with ya (it is terrible advice).

I prefer massive engine leaks. Don't ever have to worry about changing the oil or the filter when those occur

Good info though - thanks for the leg work

I THOUGHT I had not reset my FSS when I did my last change. I usually change at 5000 to 5500 miles ( to hell with that FSS nonsense - 5000 miles of driving means a LOT of byproducts are floating around in the oil...) Well, I DID reset it, and now have a "-300" in the window.
My service records show I have 6900 miles on my oil !

As I sit here, it is draining into the pan and the new oil and filter is sitting on the shelf, to be put in, in a few minutes.
This will be my second time with Mobile 1 5W50 - the oil of champions (or, maybe just the obsessive...).
