Default Help

I have a 2005 CF Limited and was told the loud sound it is making is cause by a hold in the pipe above the catalytic converter and the whole pipe with the converter must be replaced and the cost will be 1700.00.
Does anyone know if there 's a temp. fix for this because the replacement may take over a week just to get and they want the old part shipped back to them.

Have you gone to Midas or Tuffy muffler ? Sounds like a hole in the head pipe. Factory parts prices are a little silly but suspect either a good shop could build you a set or you could buy a good used set from a wreck.

Use this diagram to figure out what parts you need and ask again.

Thanks, Padgett, This diagram is great to show exhaust system parts. I was told the hole is in #2 so it appears they will be replacing the whole section. I will check with midas
for a temp. fix or better price. Again Thanks

To save $1,700 I'd think a patch could be welded in. Failing that an after market Cat and a length of exhaust tube would be way less. Do not let the CAT get away for nothing, there is platinum inside it and the scrap value is good bucks. If you pay list price for a Cat you want money back on the old Cat.

Get a look at the hole, otherwise you are taking them at their word and that is a very foolish mistake. They ALWAYS lie, it's in their blood.

They wanted the old Cat back, but they were probably not giving you anything for it.

I see prices ranging from $50 to $157 on car-part.com and according to the above parts diagram, that would include BOTH rear converters .....

Thanks, I will see about a patch from midas and make sure if the hole is verified hopes it works with just a patch planning on putting up for sale soon. Thanks

Hopefully a patch weld can be done on the pipe. Since a rust hole developed in one spot I would be concerned about another hole developing somewhere else. It could be an inexpensive quick fix, but might only be a stop gap solution.

I did a quick search on ebay for "Crossfire Catalytic", and found used, aftermarket, and new OEM for sale. There are certainly lower cost replacement part options. It's the same part for the SLK320. There was even a Magnaflow brand.

I'd be more curious why there is a hole in that area. In salt states usually the muffler goes first. Be interesting if it was really a blown joint biscuit.

I took my CF in to a Meineke car care center and was told the dealer don't tell me the truth in that the hole couldn't be weld but the crack at the joint at the top of #2 was weld and fix by Meineke in less than 30 Min. for under $100. Car up and running great so now I will look for the set I need at a better price than the stealership. I was told the weld job should hold.
Again, thanks for all the great information.

If it is welded well then you would be wasting your money on a new set.
As I said in my previous post dealers ALWAYS lie.

How do you know a dealers rep is lying to you? Answer, his/her lips are moving. An oldie but true all the same.

You are right, I will just wait and spend that money on a tune-up and oil change but not at the dealership.
Thanks to this forum 15min save me over $1000.

WHEN will people stop taking these cars to Chrysler Dealers?

We preach and preach and preach - I guess the auto industry has done a GREAT job of selling new car dealer 'service'...

I take my Jeep to the dealership, get free oil changes there. Also if anything big breaks, it has a lifetime warranty through Chrysler.

Also trust them to look up things on their computer I have no access to and to do exactly what I tell them.

Like lawyers and politicians they have their place, just never ask them what to do, tell them what you need done and ask how they would do it.

OTOH if you need to ask someone then start here and then find an independent shop.

Just for S&G I am tempted to ask what The Book says for a price to change my speedo light bulb. I suspect that the answer has many digits.

I have had good luck at the Mazda dealership when we had the Mazda. Family owned and family ran. I have been lied to flat out by the Chrysler dealership. The problem they have is I know the owner. So, when this happens, I just look at them and say, well, I will ask Pete if that is necessary. Pete is in his 70's, German, and for some reason we have always had a great relationship when it came to car deals. He drives a Mercedes even though he could drive anything on his 5 Star lot. I owned jeeps for years. Lots of them, mostly wranglers a few Cherokees. But you really need a good relationship with the service writer or the shop mgr or you are going to get hosed. Once they know I am friends with Pete, I don't have a problem. He runs his dealership with an iron fist literally. I once witnessed him fire the whole showroom of salesmen. All but one. I sold cars for him part time for a couple of months until he hired all new people. I like him, but I would never work for him full time....lol Dealerships can be fine if you take the time to get to know the people who own it, and run it... Make a relationship with them and they will take care of you. I still drop by and visit with Pete from time to time. But I never let them touch my cars. Not even an oil change. The Mazda dealer, yes... Never had a problem there. They let you watch from a window view waiting area.
