Track Tested: Exhaust cutout vs Dynomax Super Turbo Muffler
Track Tested: Exhaust cutout vs Dynomax Super Turbo Muffler
I changed my exhaust again. This is version 5, with the Dynomax Super Turbo muffler. I know, I've lost my mind.
I installed a Jegs electric cutout before the muffler. The details on the exhaust are in this thread. Last night I got some 1/4 mile runs with the cutout closed and open for comparison. The attached file shows all the details.
In a nutshell: My best time with the cutout closed was a 12.830. My best time with it open was 12.744. The cutout was 0.086 faster open than the Dynomax Super turbo. That's just a little under a tenth. I did not expect a big difference. I think it speaks well of the Dynomax muffler. I thought a turbo style muffler might hurt performance a little more than that.
"But wait" you say, "I thought your were faster than that Matt?" I am normally. I removed the stacked pulleys while diagnosing a problem. Nothing for you to worry about, I should have it back to normal soon.

Re: Track Tested: Exhaust cutout vs Dynomax Super Turbo Muffler
So a good "closed" system is as good as the cut-outs, basically. Do you feel or have you tested any of the exhaust systems you have had to get actual power results? I am so tempted to do exhaust work but from what I have read there is little to be gained from a $1000. system. I have a system planned. PYPES cats for forced induction vehicles, an x-pipe instead of the H it has, resonator delete and a BORLA muffler as they have no drone and make good low end torque. Finding exhaust pipes to use is where I am having a hard time, know a good source that is not $800.? 2.25" would likely be fine if needed to keep velocity up to help scavenging. Thanks for the experience!
