Default misfire that went away

Driving to work Thursday afternoon, maybe doing 100km/h, come to ca corner, turn right after slowing down and flicking into 3rd gear to get back up to speed. All of a sudden we go from the normal growl of the car speeding up to a loud barking noise. off the gas....back on and it is still there. Sounded like a missfire to me (lost at least on cylinder) gear down to 2nd push down on the pedal, lots o noise but no power and we are slowing dowm.

So pull over and prepare to find my wallet in the hands of the dealership or worse. Stopped side of the road, car is idling like it is on 4 of the usual 6.

Shut down, sit and think. say a nasty word or two. then cause it is the only thing I can think of, I fire the car back up.
Purring like a kitten..... of we go and I have driven it about 300km since. Nothing, not a mis, not a hint of anything wrong.

SO before this happens again and doesnt work out in my favour, any thoughts or suggestions as to where to start looking for a culprit, or do I just wait for a repeat.

Thanks in advance.

You could get the codes read and see if there are any pending codes.

check coil connections. A small jolt, even a large speed bump can loosen a connection.

I had a small fender bender loosen all the coils on the driver's side. It wasn't until stepped on the pedal hard that I got a misfire code and poor performance. I checked the coil connections and 3 of them snapped back into place with a gentle push. Better than Viagra.

The two items may be related - unstable 12 volt power caused by a crappy, old battery. But what I find disturbing here is your "trip to the dealer" remark.

Unless you need the TPMS modules reprogrammed, NOTHING warrants a trip to the dealer.

If you are just going to take the car to the dealer, you don't need us, you need a bottomless pit of money and time.

It appears that you have recently purchased your XF and joined this forum which contains a wealth of information. Welcome. There are individuals who contribute to this forum whose knowledge and experience are unequalled.

To properly diagnose your car’s issue(s) more information will need to be obtained. Check out the link ala-xfire provided and see if there are any codes that can be read.

As a member of this forum you are now part of “us”. There may be rare instances in which you might need to take your car to a dealer. As an example I recently had to have my skreem module replaced in one of my Crossfires and a DRB III was need for reprogramming. As part of “us” the forum may help you solve the hiccup your car experienced and as “us” the knowledge that diagnosis and solves your car’s issue will be helpful to other forum members. Meaning the rest of “us”.

Again, welcome to this forum and your willingness to join “us” and to seek information on your new Crossfire.

Thanks Guys, and no worries, trip to the dealer is not high on my list. Sorry for offending my mentioning it.

So today we add another piece to the mystery. Took the car for a run started fine. stopped grabbed a coffee, and when I tried to start up, cranked but no fire. Did this twice, then the car lit as per normal.

This has happened two other times today, So Im thinking that it is a related issue. and all leads back to the battery. Im guessing that I need to start there knowing that i have a solid power supply.

Will keep updates flowing.

And of course any thoughts or suggestions on culprits would be greatly appreciated.

T
