Could be the reverse lockout cable. Check that before removing trans.

by the way, i took it to rustproof, and even if other things improved (as happens when rustproofing), the problem remains.

Can you tell us what the end result was? I'd like to know what fixed it. I'm having similar problems with my shifter. Thanks
