I have a 2005 Crossfire Limited with 87K miles and recently noticed a whining noise coming from in front of the engine, more towards the alternator side (power steering pump pulley side is good). Sounds like a turbo is spooling up when I accelerate. Can be repeated when parked and revving the engine. I replaced the water pump and serpentine belt back in December. Just a slight leak from one of the top bolts on the water pump but that could be gasket issue or bolt is not torqued enough. I did notice the tensioner pulley assembly wiggles rotationally a bit while it is running. Could that be the issue or has it caused the alternator bearing to go bad? Should I replace the alternator and the tensioner pulley?

 

That tensioner should have no movement. Replace it. Even if the noise is still there at least you didn’t waste any money.

Unfortunately no, my sound is like a higher pitch noise getting louder when you rev the engine. I order a new belt tensioner assembly and alternator over the weekend. Hopefully either one will help. Thanks for chiming in though.

 

Take off the belt and check each bearing individually.

 

Agree, several had mentioned that in older posts. So very odd to hear this high pitch sound and it gets magnified when you rev the engine. Will send update post soon.

 

Did you ever find your issue? I have to remove my belt today and check all bearings and pulleys. I hope you found your issue because this sound is annoying

 

Yes I did find out the exact location of my whining noise and it ended up being the alternator bearings. So I had to replace it and did however replace the belt tensioner pulley and idler pulley first to rule them out. Both had significant wear so it was only a matter of time. The lower alternator bearing bolt was a pain to align so that was the only issue I had replacing that componant. Hope you were able to find your issue and fix it. It helps to have another person listen to all the pulley areas to narrow it down. Good luck!

 

 

Not a problem, that is what we are here for. My alternator was still charging fine but you could hear the whining noise closer to that side of the engine. It could be the water pump pulley bearing too. I did replace that in December too. So for me the only original accessories on the front of my engine are the power steering pump and AC pulley. If you take serpentine belt off, you should spin the Idler pulley first. If it continues to spin for a bit, then the bearing is bad. If it stops fairly quickly, then it is okay. As for the belt tensioner pulley, they feel gritty when spun tested. You will not be able to feel any difference in your alternator pulley if the internal bearings are starting to go bad. I just checked everything and it all sounded great except my tension pulley. Holy moly it was super wiggly and noisy so I just ordered one $247 later🥺. It’s weird because the sound wasn’t even on that side so I’m not sure if the sound was just traveling to the side of the idler and alternator side. I tightened the idler pulley after putting it back on, put the belt back on and for some reason the whining sound is gone now. I’m still going to put my new tension pulley on since I’ve already ordered it and it’s really bad too. Thank you for teaching me how to check the pullies☺️ I also watched some videos and read some articles and they said everything you said so thank you again! I really appreciate you and how fast you responded. Hopefully when I get my new part I can finally play with my car again wahoo! Have a fun day!

Cheaper still if you can get away with just changing the pulley.

 

That looks like a Chrysler part number; You should be shopping for a 2003 model year Mercedes SLK 320 if your car is a Limited Crossfire or a SLK 32 AMG if it is an SRT6 model

 

Never buy a part with the Chrysler part number when an identical Mercedes part is available.

 

Mine started making that whining sound after I replaced the spark plugs. Sounds like it’s supercharged 🤣 don’t mind it too much but would like to repair it soon. Thanks for the info guys

 

It could be the idler pulley which is easy to replace. I would recommend doing it before it fails. You could possibly shred your drive belt.
