Default Intake Options Discussion for N/A cars

So, if you have been looking to do something with your intake, you know there are a few options. Needs Wings is awesome and expensive, the hot air intake on Ebay looks like it would be great at getting more air to a Forced Induction Car, not the best for an NA. There is the MERC V8 air box that lets in a bunch more air and I got to thinking.... Has anyone tried the V8 box, removed the paper filters, then put cones on the inlets. If you were to use a cone that received cold air from a duct, you could customize the ducts (im thinking easy), use the bigger box to house more air and reduce restriction, and possibly approach the results gained by the Dual Needs Wings set up. Of course you would need to do the TB upgrade but assuming you have done that already, this might be an option for HP for less that $650 for a NW single with engine cover or a double at about $950w/ cover.

I hate to use an Ebay intake set up as it would look cheap as it is. I was thinking, Weapon R because it doesn't look cheap and has decent inlet/ducting set up. Im thnking I can do 2 cones, V8 cover, custom ducting for about $300 and have a unique and clean looking set up with the engine sound of an open intake, the benefits of cold air from the ducts, and the extra air that can pass through the box and the cone filters. Anyone try this yet?

You are not going to get much better than the Mercedes cover, MAF, TB and the Eurocharged tune.
The only better options are the NW intakes, MAF, TB and a tune.

Whatever you decide you must have the tune.

I want the sound of the open intake.

Im not looking to do much better, just looking to get the sound, the cold air, the look, and more air! It will be unique as it appears no one has tried it yet either.

Are the inlets on the V8 engine cover the same diameter of the engine cover of the N/A V6?
I may start with the cones, get everything fit in place, and see if I like the sound. Once that's done, I should be able to get the correct V8 cover allowing the intake to chamber more air just before the TB.

No they are bigger, about 3.10 inside.
The OEM intakes tubes are a push fit up inside the Mercedes air box inlets. That is because the OEM intake tubes have that flare on the ends, it will not last long though as they will get damaged and air will suck in upstream of your cone filters, but not the regular filters in the cover of course.

You can use the large MB and put K&N filters in the box. That with the 74mm TB, and 3" tubes going from the box to outside the rad wall will give you what you want. It still not cheap. Here's a pic of what it would look like. The nice thing about NW is that is all packaged for you. I had to source all the components separately.

Normally they sell them singly, sometimes they put two together, it does get confusing. The price gives it away though.
Re-usable's like K&N's are popular.

K&N 33-2290 for the N/A Amazon $40 each

and

K&N 33-2256 for the SRT 6 Amazon $37 each

Look around and you should be able find a better price?

K&N 99-5000 Amazon $11 is the cleaning/oil kit. Used once/10K miles.

It looks like Autoplicity.com is cheapest by $8 each Check shipping costs, though.

K&N 33-2181 for the V8 Mercedes cover used on the Mercedes mod, price $37 each.

Now this is what I'm talking about! I have spent the night pricing up options. Volant makes a fab kit for about $200 with plastic/carbon parts that look like they would work well. Airraid makes a fab kit too I think. Weapon R would be $200 a side.

The V8 box in this pic with parts looks like it would more expensive than the NW kit.

Looks like the Needs Wings Single is going to be the most logical option for the $ and time involved. If needs wings sold the MAF and coupler together by themselves, the rest would be easy! Someone please sell me their NW single!

I see NW singles ( and duals ) for the NA's for sale here on the forum from time to time.
I got mine that way from a member in San Diego a couple of years ago for $150.
If you buy me a dual, I'll give you my single

I see SRT duals for sale, but not N/A. I saw a N/A dual once but it was too much!

How do you like your single? Do you think the dual will be worth the $$$$ or is it more for eye candy. They both look amazing! I guess the dual looks twice as amazing!

I wouldn't recommend the dual for the NA. You wont get much benefit from it, especially if you want to keep the cost down.

^^^ 10-4 to that, good buddy. The single is all you need on the NA, unless you are into ostentatious bling.

I think I could build a copy of the NW single with this kit, use the SRT MAF Assembly, and install the filter behind the radiator. It would be close, for about $200 less dollars, but what if something doesn't jive. what if i can't get the proper angle with standard kit. what if - what if - what if.
AIRAID U-Build-It Systems for Fabricating Custom Intakes

I used to have the extra time and the desire to do what hasn't yet been done. I still have the ideas, just not the time.

Maybe someone can use my idea, do the leg work, and save us a few bucks down the road in the process.

It's been done over and over. You could go that route, but at the end you're left with the decision to try, and if it doesn't work, you start all over again, or just buy the ready made, proven solution.

Thats where I have landed. I was considering the spectra universal kit x 2. That's $120 with ducting. I want something that looks a bit more refined under the hood, and so it looks like I may wait for NW or just do the V8 Cover now until the NW single comes up used.

When I hired on with [ un-named company ] in the middle 60's, I was told to get rid of my Karmann Ghia and get an American car.
