Does the new addition retract? Does it 'wobble'? Inquiring minds want to know.

If it went down it would become an air brake.

 

You have probably hit the nail on the head there 180.

If they had fitted the spoiler to a lowered mechanism and rigged up a 2 way switch which was brake operated (raises on depress and lowered on release) they could be onto something

 

Or, on the other hand, if it went down at say 130 MPH, then it would be an air brake, and it could transform into a very powerful LIFT device, not a good thing to lift the rear off the ground at 130 ....

( maybe put a matching one on the front, then you could sail over your competition )

 

seriously though if you wanted to actually convert an NA rear door into an air brake it wouldn't be that difficult as most of what you need is already there. Granted the motor isn't the fastest at lifting but it would have an effect. Always wondered why nobody has actually tried this rather than spending fortunes on big brake kits. Just thinking out of the box a little.

 

Ok let me me explain my drunken thoughts Hic!

They have fitted an ironing board onto an already raised NA back spoiler mechanism which hopefully is set at the correct angle.
I am saying if you mounted a spoiler at the correct angle on a closed (lowered) NA rear mechanism and connected a two way brake operated switch (raises on depress and lowers on release) this could actually work.

 

If (and that's a BIG IF), you had a wind tunnel to 'test' configurations, that would insure your not adding ANY under-the-car air at speed. Also, you would also have to consider any drag from any spoiler modification that DID NOT effect aerodynamics in relation to airflow around and under the car (again, at speeds). If your going for looks (affect) only, then limit your speed to under anything that could adversely effect handling. That is my opinion (Drops microphone and leaves)...

Air brakes.... I like what they are doing. Experimenting... The engineers stated that both the 'ironing board" and the "skate board" provided the same downforce in the tunnel. Now these young men said the wing they built was lighter than the skate board. We know the mounting will take the force put on it, so with lighter ironing board, I would only guess it may wobble at 130... Both the original ironing board and the skate boards are pretty rigid. And that kind of force at that speed, it might get interesting. Doing the 1/2 miles events, on run ways, with the usual wind/cross winds etc., you can respect the aero on the cars...

 

So nobody agrees with me? Under heavy braking or any braking for that matter the nose of the car would be pointing into the ground. A rear spoiler that was connected (at the correct/standard position) to the "skate board" in the closed position and only raised once you depressed brake and then lowered once you released wouldn't work?

Isn't that how air brakes work?

 

Jim hall made a movable rear wing for downforce and braking. I considered it and spoke to rob about reworking my srt but never got the sawzall out to do it. Seems sort of useful and would have a real look about it.

I figured that it would be workable but needed to use the power steering pump to control the cyclinders operating it. Enjoy, Woody

A lot of high end cars use this concept...Verron....Porsche... to name a few. Just need to engineer it. The problem here is, the right set up... A wing that big at high speeds could truely get you in trouble if not set up right. I remember in our conversation with the engineers, you really need the spoilers above 85 if I remember their logic correctly. I also put my belly pans back on after talking with them. They truely work as well, keeping the underneath flat for downforce to work correctly...
