Default Christmas Season!

Just wondering if any else is in the wild and wooly retail business? I have been working retail now for 30+ years and this season is going down as 1 of the worst I've seen. Open the doors and few if any come in, run discounts that give the stuff away and no one cares, makes the long hours - just that much longer.

Anyone else doing this for a living? ( living - hum?)

No, I'm not in the retail business but I'd like to address your question from another angle. The liberal news media typically likes to paint a bad picture of retail business at Christmas. When internet retail became popular, they blamed the internet for soft brick and mortar store sales. This year, the news didn't say anything about the internet but chose to blame the economy. On the radio news I heard (several times), the vey next story was how Amazon had their best Christmas ever. I did 95% of my Christmas shopping online.

I do not work in the retail industry from the normal perpective, but I have seen the economic effects all the same. I work for a transportation company with some of our clients being Walmart, Target, Sears, Starbucks, etc. I have seen an effect on our business because of the retail stores attempt to lean out their inventory in response to slow brick-and-mortor sales. I can't say specifics, but volumes are down more with a few companies than they are with others...and are definately down as a whole in the retail market.

I work behind the scenes in the IT Dept. supporting the BIG ORANGE BOX ! Though sales are down as they are across the board, Black Friday was one of the best sales days for The Depot in a long while !

Economies are changing - and pretty rapidly. Retail is collapsing slowly around us, and clearly online stores are making a killing by being cheaper. Mind you, they have very sharp practices which border on illegality here.

Amazon, Britain’s most popular website for Christmas shopping, is making its staff work seven days a week and threatening them with the sack if they take time off sick.
– Made to work a compulsory 10˝hour overnight shift at the end of a five-day week. The overnight shift, which runs from Saturday evening to 5am on Sunday, means they have to work every day of the week.
Not to mention humilating and degrading:

Staff at Amazon, the online shopping giant, say it pressured them to drop their trousers for a mass mooning photograph as a response to last weekend’s report in The Sunday Times about arduous working conditions at its Marston Gate warehouse in Bedfordshire.
Another source said: “They were sending the supervisors to try to persuade people on a one-to-one basis. It’s ludicrous and a lot of the staff are upset about it.” More than 200 staff were eventually photographed – but waving to the camera instead of mooning.
I don’t know how employment laws operate in the US, but here in the UK this could land the company in deep trouble.
