Should faze me here in south Florida, as I've seen a three pack (Marlboro Ultra Lights) go from 9.67 to 11.67 overnight.
But when I used to live in Cook County, Illinois (Chicago & suburbs) one pack of cigarettes goes for almost $8.00!!
Enough to make you quit!

Smoked 2 packs of "BELAIRS" a day for 31 years! Wish I had the money I spent! Stopped "COLD TURKEY" 11 years ago. If I stopped anybody can. It can cause "BRAIN DAMAGE" read my posts!

In a couple years the revenue from the tax will diminish and then they'll start adding taxes to fast food. Another tax for the poor. I guess I should just be glad that I'm not poor and don't smoke.
You think the cig tax is bad, if BO gets what he wants with Cap and Trade, ulitity bills will go through the roof. Not to mentioned the cost of goods produced by heavy manufacturing.
Under the cover of saving the environment, C&T will be the best political moneymaker since the income tax.

Smokers are easy targets, but so are fat people & no one's taxing junk food, butter, & sugar. In fact, they are a "special class", get special chairs if necessary at work. Okay, they DO provide ashtrays 20 feet from building entrances. In the meantime, smokers are banished to the far end of parking lots, provided no special smoking area, etc. In process of trying to quit, but don't really want to. This can go on & on, couldn't it?

Sorry, couldn't resist.
I Quit ten years ago. I had a 2.5 pack a day habit. I tried the patch but was having nightmares and joint pain using them so I just toughed it out. Time is the only thing that helped me stay away from them. Every month it got a little easier to divert my desire to light up. Three years after I quit smoking I still was having dreams that centered on smoking. The urges and dreams became less frequent with time. It's a tough row to hoe. Just hang in there. And when the urge strikes find something to redirect your attention to. Cheap women work for me, god love em'.

Heck, I'm STILL chewing Nicorette intermittently & it's been going on 4 yrs. gone for me.
So where are they going to make up the tax revenue when more & more people quit? After all, the government doesn't give a rat's as_ about YOU, it's in their best interest to have everyone continue to smoke!
"Sin" taxes have always been a mystery to me.......

I think they should legalize...oh, right....cigarettes...tax the crap out of them. I went cold turkey 10 years ago and haven't have one since.
Oh, and for the folks looking to politicize this, when any campaigning politician promises "not to raise taxes", they are generally talking about income taxes. Taxes on individual items like tobacco and alcohol typically don't fall under a "not raining taxes" campaign pledge. Aside from that point, the increase being discussed here was proposed in congress in the middle of 2008. It's also a politically and socially popular tax to increase. Smoking is, by all mean, a disgusting habit and also happens to kill you. The number of smokers is also steadily declining. Getting a tax increase on tobacco products passed is like shooting fish in a barrel that is also made of fish.
I personally think they should legalize most currently illegal drugs and treat them like tobacco and alcohol; regulate and tax the crap out them.

Think about the billions saved in law enforcement costs, prison costs, court costs! Heck, perhaps the entire DEA would disappear; one less government bureaucracy to have to fund!
Especially since this apparently never-ending "War on Drugs" hasn't stopped the flow of same one iota & it's been going on for how long? Decades? I'd love to see the looks on the faces of today's drug cartel bosses when their operations become moot.
