Default Walter Cronkite dies

c/p from AP

Walter Cronkite, the premier TV anchorman of the networks' golden age who reported a tumultuous time with reassuring authority and came to be called "the most trusted man in America," has died. He was 92.

CBS vice president Linda Mason says Cronkite died at 7:42 p.m. Friday with his family by his side at his home in New York after a long illness.

He was the face of the "CBS Evening News" from 1962 to 1981, when stories ranged from the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. to racial and anti-war riots, Watergate and the Iranian hostage crisis.

It was Cronkite who read the bulletins coming from Dallas when Kennedy was shot Nov. 22, 1963, interrupting a live CBS-TV broadcast of the soap opera "As the World Turns."

Former President George H. W. Bush hailed the former newsman as “a towering, respected figure” in television journalism.”

“Many Americans heard it from Walter first that President Kennedy had died, or that man had walked on the moon. He is already missed," Bush said in a statement.

The last truly honest News Anchor in America. May he rest in Peace

RIP Walter.

With all due respects, I have a lot of mixed emotions about WC. In 1968, "The most trusted man in America" used his influence to say the Vietnam War could not be won. LBJ said "If I've lost Cronkite, I've lost middle America." IMHO, that was a turning point for the TV media in that they then knew they had the power to greatly influence the populace.

The national TV media then knew they had a greater power to influence America over the print media.

"....and that's the way it is."

Makes you yearn for the days when news anchors reported the news instead of being partisan spokespeople - no matter which side of the fence you fall on.

Dad was a door-gunner (UH-60) and flight mechanic (Cobra), Vietnam War

I wonder if the Nation will be transfixed with ten days of media frenzy and a memorial service in Staples Arena. A moment of silence in the House. A letter of condolence from Barack Obama to the Cronkite family.

I doubt it - wrong generation.

There are few newscasters who were able to present the news in a manner you mention and I did enjoy enjoy the seemingly truthfulness and non partisan person he appeared to be when I was younger.
