Notes from the Real World
Had an interesting conversation with our trash hauler today. Seems it is illegal to dispose of Flourescent bulbs in the trash. Not just thelong tubes but also the Compact Flourescent Light bulbs.
Because the CFL's contain mercury, they are a real hazard. In point of fact, if you break one, legaly you should have a HazMat team collect it an remediate the room in which it broke.
This is more than kind of serious to each of us as we have no choice now but use them. Standard size incadescents are all but out now, with no one in America allowed to make them, or sell them, as of next year.
Here is what happened to a major store chain that didn't "get it"
08/27/2008: EPA, Macy’s Announce Settlement Over Hazardous Waste Management Violations
In other words, if you trhow CFL's or spent and broken flourescent tubes in the trash you are subject to fines. Massive ones. also, you must recycle them, which is fine but you cannot store them ***** nilly at your residence or place of business. You must keep them in a container, marked with a date, and not keep them for more than a year.
This is supposed to be a great environmental victory, and it likely is, but dammed inconveinent for just about everybody. Despite the fact that he is not getting credit for the contribution the law makes to the environmental movement, you can thank GWB 43.
Enjoy!
