You are welcome Erzer!

I like Kustom Radars better, but look what I found about the Decatur Genesis II (I admit that I did not know that their DSP was this good! Gonna ask one of the Lamar County guys if it REALLY works this good... this is from a sales brochure.)

Fast Done Right

The Genesis II Select offers an option for FASTER tracking. When a Decatur Electronics radar is placed into the Fast mode, it will display and track the speed of the vehicle that is the second strongest target -- as long as that target is going faster than the primary target. The full Doppler audio is also generated for the Fast target and the operator can lock a Fast target just as easily as the primary target speed can be locked. This is the only method of clocking fast targets that meets all of the evidentiary rules demanded by the courts.

Emphasis mine, and I'm not so sure about that claim about the courts.... laws and interpretations vary a LOT around the country.

Oh, and wait here.... A "SELECT" model? Never seen one. This is something new in the last few years.

I know my detector works well, when a policeman is driving around with the gun on it will tell me he's coming LONG before I see him. Even instant on (hold, why would it be called that, "instant on" is much more descriptive :P ) it will pick up pretty far away. It has definitely saved me many times, but you have to use them right.

I don't hesitate to recommend a valentine to anyone who is in the market for a good detector. Would be cool to hear from anyone who has better knowledge of how they work though.

And yeah, speeding through a school zone is about the dumbest thing you can do.

My brother is a highway patrol and takes radar all day. He laughs at cops that write tickets for 5PM over the limit. He sets his radar gun at 20+ over the limit for the same exact reason that you describe. Because he wants to write a ticket and not have to get into a conversation with the driver. He figures if you are going more than 20 over then he shouldn't have to hear "I can't believe you wrote me a ticket for only going XXX over the limit". He says even if he only gets the 20+ over the limit there are plenty of tickets to write... he doesn't have to waste his time on guys like you only doing 9 over.

Not to mention wasting my time. In my case I had to pay $90.00 to listen to Doogie's rant. But since I am "a rich guy with a fancy car", I guess I got off easy.

all of you need to read the other thread that pizzaguy and I did....but I will answer questions on operation....as for the youngster in Wyoming, he would be polishing my patrol car if I was his captain. Totally unprofessional....I approach a car, making sure of my surroundings, traffic, occupants in the vehicle, etc, etc...my 1st question is always, may I see your drivers license, registration for the vehicle, and proof of insurance, PLEASE....once this request has been met, 2nd question, do you know why I have stopped you...many grt answers to this question, I won't elaborate now, 3rd I stopped you for your speed, the speed limit here is "pick one", and you were doing 90, lol...I am going to issue you a citation for speeding, or I am going to give you a warning....I will not enter into a conversation, nor will I respond to the comments made...no reason to...now...once I return to the vehicle to either issue the citation or warning, I will ask is there any further questions...if its argumentive, I simply respond to the court day...that's all that needs to happen....there are hundreds of things that can happen in a traffic stop...literally hundreds...all the way from a simple warning guy checks out ok, to a gun battle with drug runners...but the above is the basics...

Forgot an important thing for all of you to know....just about all departments today, especially state depts, use a camera. If an officer is unprofessional as this officer was, all you have to do is contact his post, or barricks...whatever it is in your state, and a supervisor will review his traffic stop. You must do it immediately, because all depts are different in how long they will archive the tapes, or 'puter files

I could talk all day about this, just one more point...I have won court cases with the camera too, watch what you say as well...lol

I had a guy contest his citation in court because.....I wrote him for 65 in a 40, and he argued he was not doing 65, and I asked then how fast were you going? He said not a bit over 55. I said well, when you saw me, you dropped to 55, unfortunetly for you the speed limit is 40. Well, we went to court, and he argued with the judge that he wasn't speeding at all. I plugged in the tape...and "guilty" was the verdict. So, caution on what you say...and this has happened many, many times...

This is the kind of professionalism that I have always encountered from State Patrol Officers in the past and why, I have always thought so highly of them "best cops ever" It was the lack of this that made me so upset with Doogie, and upset with myself for losing my temper and telling him off. More so than the ticket! I am thankful to be able to come here and rant, and I do worry for Doogie that not everyone has such a harmless place or way to do so! I can now use the name "Doogie" with some affection rather than the malice I started with.

Hey, I had a heated conversation with an Ohio State Patrolman. He cited me for 60 in a 45. The posted speed limit was 55. They were putting up temp construction signs to reduce the limit to 45. There wasn't any construction at the time. He said "you truckers" need to learn to slow down, there is going to be construction here for the next 2 yrs. I am citing you for speeding in a construction zone. I wasn't happy about it and let him know. I shouldn't have done that, but his attitude was against truckers, and once he found out I was a Sheriff Deputy, he back peddled, which peeved me off even more. I took the ticket. Went to court, argued my point, paid court costs, citation was thrown out. I was speeding, but 5 mph over and not in a construction zone, so I was happy with just paying court costs...

I have questions about this.

I got pulled over in new jersey for no seat belt at 8pm and my license was in my trunk. Now when the cop walked up to me and asked for it all I told him very nicely that my license was in the trunk of the car in my jacket. He said I was not allowed to get it. I then asked him if he could get it and he said no. 45 minutes later I got 3 tickets. One for no seatbelt which I had on other wise I would have been listing to that stupid dinging noise and who wants to do that and there is no way he could see into my car at 8pm. My second was for no license well I had it in the car he just would not let me get it. Now if a drug dealer has crack or something in the trunk than he gets arresed for possesion. And me getting a ticket for no license says I did not have possesion of my license. It make so sense to me. Now my last one was some ticket that mean't I did not have driving privliages to drive in new jersey because I had a limited license. Never heard of it and the cop couldn't explain it to me when I asked him what it was for.

Ok so for the second ticket should I have been allowed to get my license out of my trunk or was he doing the right thing?

Next why do cops ask for registration when its on the windshield of my car?

Also is asking "Do you know why I stopped you?" a required question? I never got why they ask that.

I never get asked for insurance is that because im in new york or do they just forget?

Thanks

I would have allowed you to get it, although my hand might just be on my gun, lol, Most state law requires the license to be in your possession, in other words, on your person. In doesn't have registration posted, it is a piece of paper usually kept in glove box, console, or clipped on sun visor. Sense you didn't have you license on your person, that must be some crazy law they have out there. Next advice for you all is....keep the seat belt on...don't take it off to reach for anything until you are asked...I don't doubt that people had their belt on, but I may not have seen that before the stop...In requires proof of insurance, another piece of paper kept usually w/ registrations

ok, one more....the question, Do you know why I stopped you is just a set up in a way. We must have probably cause to make a traffic stop...sometimes the answer is great probably cause coming straight from the suspect....if you say no, then we tell you, but if you say because I was probably going too fast, or I just disregarded that stop sign, or just peeled out to avoid tighed's blue car....
