And that right there is the reason why you should really not answer that question with anything other than "Because you wanted to conduct a traffic stop."

If the police officer was waiting for speeders, or was checking for seat belt usage, or any other form of violation, he is going to stop somebody sooner or later, and it just happens to be you at that moment in time.

Now, some police officers are always friendly and polite.
Others are high strung, and are looking for a reason to yell.
You never know which one you are getting pulled over by until he opens his mouth.

The problem is, once you have Officer Disrespectful at your window, and he's screaming and hollering at you, there isn't any good way to get him to calm down. If you ask him a question, he is going to take that as a challenge to his authority, and he's most likely going to escalate the hostility level he is already dishing out.

Trying to be extremely polite, timid and submissive is going to trigger the officers that are extremely aggressive, and are trying to dominate you, and make you feel powerless.

Being aggressive, nasty, and rude to the police officer is the quickest way to get tazered. Don't do that.

There really isn't anything you can do to calm a police officer down who is being hostile, rude, and disrespectful.

At the most, all you can say is "Doesn't your patrol car have one of those new video camera systems in it?" In response, the officer will either say yes or no. If he says yes, then you can follow up that with "And the radio on your person is able to pick up both your side and my side of our conversation, correct?" Again, a yes or no will be your answer.

To that answer, your final statement to him should simply be "Thank you officer. That information is very helpful to me, and I no longer feel as threatened by your hostility."

That will get just about any officer to pause for a second and think about the situation for a moment. Usually, they will stop talking, and just go about getting you on your way down the road.

What does oledoc2u think about the above?

BC.

Those in-car video systems are often thought of as a way to convict more citizens of .... whatever. And to an extent, that is true.

But fact is, they protect both the officer and citizen - from each other. It is VERY hard to defend against a recording of what happened.

I do know of one officer who was accused of propositioning a 16 year old girl. This was back in 1996-7. The officer ticketed her for speeding. I guess the dad wanted the ticket "taken care of".

When the girl's father came to talk to the chief, he told the father, "Let me review the tape".
Father: "Ah, tape? What tape?"
Chief: "We tape all of our traffic stops."
Father: "Well, I don't wanna get the guy in no trouble". (What does THAT mean? Your little girl was propositioned and YOU don't wanna cause trouble?)

The chief let him off. He COULD have let him sign a complaint and get him for a false report, right?

I asked the chief, "WHy didn't you let him sign something and throw him in jail?"
Chief: "Well, first of all Mark, the officer was driving car 5. Only cars 2 and 3 have video in them!"

ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!

Odd how the guy was only interested in his little girl's defense UNTIL the tape was mentioned!

What?............... Glad you made it home in your BLUE SRT. Now if you had two BLACK SRT's roadsters, you may have been home sooner. I mean 3hours in between posts. Where were you? We need an exact timeline.

I have found a great way not to get speeding tickets, drive like an old man. It took nearly 53 years and a few tickets along the way but I finally found out.
A guy I once new, who disliked the police and who was a bit older than I was, told me that when he was stopped by the police he was very nice to them and said that as a result they treated him like the father they never new. It took me a while to get what he was saying, sarcasm was his strong point.

Not to get anyone on the defensive here...

I've seen about Radar usage, video cameras, personal interaction on here. How about just not speeding in the 1st place???

Wish I knew. I can't explain it.
I can drive "normal" but it's not me.
I WANT to drive fast. Any psychiatrist out there?

Who's with me?

I've always heard what goes on the road stays on the road...or something similar.

Happened 40 years ago, but I got a speeding ticket from a NY State Trooper for doing 52 in a 50. That's what happens when you're a 19 year old in a 1969 Road Runner.

I left Ft. Rucker, AL in the summer of '67 in my brand new Chevelle SS396 (425hp) on my way back to Maine. It was pretty uneventful until I was almost thru Georgia (few interstates then). I was passing thru a small town when the lights came on. A pot bellied deputy (right out of a TV program!) saundered up to my car. In my most polite and non-Yankee tone I ask him what was wrong since I knew I hadn't been speeding (people had warned me about these type towns). He told me "Boy, if you weren't speeding now, you had been speeding and just weren't caught with a car like that!"

I could pay the fine now or wait for the circuit judge in 3 days (in jail). I paid my fine and went home.

I know specifically that they can't in Georgia.

Unknown anywhere else - but I have never heard a driver's check come back over the radio as "record clear, insurance valid, registration expires next year.... and driver is a CCW permit holder..."

I really don't think so. Maybe Doc or someone can add to this.

They can't in Maine. However, we are told when stopped to immediately tell the cop your armed and keep your hands on the wheel until he tells you what to do.

I know some who was stopped. The cop asked for weapon, his CW card and hsi drivers license in that order. Once he wrote ticket he gave them back in the opposite order.

He also asked if that was the only weapon.

I was stopped soon after moving to GA. Had just got my CCW permit.

So, I told the officer right away that I had a CCW and a gun in my jacket. His response? "Yea, will fine - but that is now why I stopped you, sir".

He did not appear to care. I asked Major Beam of Spalding county about if I should inform the officer. His response? "Well, probably not, unless you are asked. First, it sounds like you are "grandstanding" a bit, you know, bragging that you are such a good citizen, that you passed the state and FBI checks. Second, the fact is, a permit-holder is not a statistical threat, your record must be very clean in order to pass the background check".

It goes against my grain, but I n o longer mention it.
