Default Lost a title after purchase and owners now dead

I purchased a car from a co-workers father (97 chry LHS) back around april i think. Anyways i lost the title of the vehicle after a crazy ex was moving out of the house shortly after. My co-workers father had passed away and i didn't want to bother her with anything for a few weeks. When i did confront her about the possibility of getting another title for me so i could register the vehical she got a little upset and basicaly told me i was on my own. I made several attemps over a few months to get her to at least put somthing down in writing if she wasn't going to help me at all but she all but told me to **** off. So since then i have been to the dmw a few times and even called the department of revenue, but no one has really helped me with info on what i need to get this damn thing titled.

If anyone could give me options on how to get this vehicle titled i would love to know. I plan on doing another round of calling the DMV and D.O.R. again maybe i'll get a helpful person one of these times....

oh additional details, no bill of sale either and i paid the co-worker in cash when she brought the vehicle to work $1,000. there was multiple witness of the sale at least if i ever needed that in writing. and no comments about the obvious mistakes i made in not paying by check and getting a written bill of sale i need constructive criticism

You have no canceled check and no receipt?

I have NO idea how you can fix THIS.

After you made the purchase, did you change the name on the title with the DMV? I assume so.

Keep working the DMV. With proper ID, they should be able to provide you with a duplicate title.

almost the same happened to me years ago,,, when titles weren't so strick,, i wound buying another car same year for a few hundered bucks, then as i did take the dash apart and switch numbers and title the good car. junked the bad one. with no paper work you have two choices, 1. sign his name or junk the car,, oh if the co worker is being a ***** you can tell her that if you are driving the car and run over someone she as the as the inherit owner she is liable,,, but she may now list the car as stolen.. if i were you i would cut my loss and park it in the work parking lot and let her worry about it.. jim

I had the same problem. Did an Abandoned Title and 30 days or so later the car was mine.
Here's info from your state.

If you never changed the title into you or your ex-wifes name.

You will need to go back to the co-worker, get a certified copy of the death certificate.

Your Co-worker will probably have to accompany you to the DMV. With that info they should be able to straighten it out.

Oh, And bring money. They will be looking for that.

If you transferred into the ex-wifes name....Try Flowers

you can go with tighed1's suggestion, or try to file for a "mechanics" lein. The car is on your property, the owner is now dead, and money is owed....sort of approach...good luck

Did she have permission to sell the car? Despite the payment you might not be able to claim to be the owner.
