WHY NOT ALLOW STEM CELL RESEARCH ,BECAUSE OF RELIGION?
DO YOU BELIEVE STEM CELL RESEARCH IS AGAINST HUMANITY OR FOR HUMANITY ! AND IS OUR OWN RELIGIOUS FAITH IN OUR GOVERNMENT DOING MORE BAD THAN GOOD ? SHOULD POLITICS AND RELIGION BE COMPLETLY SEPERATED?OR CAN IT BE ? WHY DO ARE LEADERS USE IT FOR THERE OWN POLICIES?
SHOULD OUR RELIGIOUS BELIEFS BE SUBJECT TO THE SAME STANDARD OF EVIDENCE WE REQUIRE IN EVERY OTHER SPHERE OF OUR LIVES?
SHOULD OUR RELIGIOUS BELIEFS BE SUBJECT TO THE SAME STANDARD OF EVIDENCE WE REQUIRE IN EVERY OTHER SPHERE OF OUR LIVES?
Embryonic stem cell research is a very difficult issue for me to wrestle with. I am a practicing Catholic and understand well the rationale behind the Church's standing. But my DW is severely disabled with an atypical form of Parkinsonism and there is nothing in the world I would like to see more than a cure for this terrible disease and other diseases that may be helped.
Do you believe religion is going to give you medical advice ? Isn't it time to use the science that we have created , just like all other advanced human knownledge.? Are we afraid of possible success?Or are we told to be afraid ? Why? politics and religion don't mix . And laws that are made against life in the name of religion should not even be made for the purpose of confusing the public.
The future is now!
The future is now!
Dan,
1. The Establishment likes to have these 'topical' controversies so that the general public does not focus on the really important issues.
2. At the end of the day, there will be some country and some doctors who go ahead and clone humans anyway.
3. Religion is responsible for most of the conflict in human history, but I respect others beliefs.
4. I just wish religious folk would stop trying to force others to share their beliefs. I'll find out if what I believe is true once I'm dead, but I'm not keen to find out.
5. If God did exist, then the XF would have at least 250 BHP.

If it's done here...this will help increase the recruiting of Islamic terrorists because we are indeed the " Great Satan " in this world. Religion is an important institution in a society aimed in preserving our humanity...making us realized that we are mortals and that there is a supreme being out there. Our hope is not on embryonic stem cell...we've only done 5% of our research in the Amazon rainforest which contains a magnitude of ingredients for medicine. Stem cell is more aligned with the gay rights activists now because they want a quick research for the cure for AIDS so that they can continue their ugly lifestyle which is worst than the less intelligent animals who still prefers the opposite sex. It is our lifestyles that makes diseases and we should be more on prevention research rather than cure thru stem cell research because with it we are sacrificing too much of our values.
And don't forget, RELIGION is what makes you live longer in this country because without religion we won't have the conscience to just kill those who are sick and the elderly. Therefore, there will be no need of stem cell research and this can save our country tons of money especially from the elderly.

Cyril, you don't need organized religion to have a conscience. I'm not religious but I know right from wrong. I was taught to treat others fairly, help those that needed it, and to always do the best that I can. I was taught to respect my elders, obey the law, and defend my country and my beliefs if need be. I was taught to respect the enviornment, others rights and beliefs and most of all to take care of my family. What else do you need? Did I miss anything? I think we all need to take more time with our kids and stop letting the church or the state do OUR jobs. I think they get too many mixed signals, and become lost in the confusion. Gay Rights Behind Stem Cell Research? How about the Regans? Christopher Reed?HMMMM. Ronnie did have a twinkle in his eye.
Stem cell can help infants to become elderly. It can help Injured or wounded like the brave service men and women that defend this country so that others can play with their cars .There is more than just helping aids victums that by the way not all Homos ,or drug addicts.or 90 year old rich people.
But you have to dig deeper that your personal beliefs came from a religious root and that's the reason you existed in this world and not flushed in the toilet. If we open up stem cell research what guaranty can we have that it won't extend to a later term embryo who is already a living being. Let us not protect animals rights first before we harvest on these living embryos. Take the case of late term abortion now...it is murder! No wonder why Kerry wont vote for the Lacy Peterson bill for making it a double murder because Kerry knows that it will affect his stand on abortion / Pro-choice. Now, where does his heart stand now?
News flash abortion is legal.Has been for 40 years .And it is never going to stop. How many in the USA 1,2,3,million a year .Were is Gore when we need him ,he has that written down on the back of his hand.
Religion has been the main political power of the last 2,000 years or more. Why ? Because the politicians made it so.Read your history .

Man.......
This is THE topic we should not discuss here.
Religion and science. These are just two areas of life that do not mix well.
I am just going to make a few comments....
According to religion, the Earth was the center of the universe. Not really correct on that one.
If God truly gave us dominion over the Earth and it's creatures, then why are we not to use the intelligence we were given? That is kind of a conflict, in my opinion.
The age of the universe according to the Bible and the age of the universe from documentable evidence has some controversy, to say the least.
And I won't even start on evolution.
That being said, I have to agree that how a person acts really has nothing to do with religion. How many millions of people have been killed in the name of religion?
And finally, how many people do you personally know that claim to be very religous, but in fact are horrible examples of humanity?
Think about that one - It will actually scare you...

personally i dont know anyone who claims to be "very" religous and are "horrible examples of humanity"(pretty harsh words, but i like it). I do know people who claim to be christians that aren't religous, but absolutely none who say they are very religous and arent good people. I would say that most people I know that are horrible examples of humanity are ones that don't claim to be religous. By the way your arguments are sorta repetitive with the rhetoric of people who attempt to find fault in religion (fighting a code of morals and ethics is weird to me, even though i completely do not associate with religion).
Back on topic, here's an idea..... why not take the proposed- in california at least- 5 billion dollars we are planning on investing in stem cell research ( as per last monday's, i believe, l.a. times) and invest it in education. Honestly, im 21 and am already getting tired of seeing money go to wars and social security and whatever other crap it goes to (What is the obsession with helping the elderly anyway?), and watching the condition of school detriorate, the student to faculty rate increase, the availability of books decrease, the gap between quality education for the rich and poor increase (while we promote education because of te outsourcing of jobs). Why don't people ever want to invest in children? When someone does, they call them a leftist and make them sound crazy......crazy times.

OK, maybe I used a wrong word (personally) in my statement.
Do you want an example? Osama Bin Laden
And I truly do believe in morals and ethics, but how does that have to be associated with religion. My parents taught me right from wrong.
And which religion is the right religion? Catholics fight Protestants for no other reason, Jews and Muslims, etc etc etc. It has been going on for thousands of years. There is no way to win this one....
The real problem in investing in social programs is that for the most part, they don't really help people to better themselves. They just stick people into a pre-concieved box and leave them there. We have spent countless billions of dollars over the last 40 years, and are we really any better off?

yes we are, or we were when clinton was president at least. i didn't say religion is the only way to learn right from wrong and be ethical, but it is a hell of an easy hand book to live that way and many people find calm in readings and prayers. and taking out the work personally complete changes your whole statement. Religion didnt create war, wars have always existed, as long as man. Ever read the odyssey? they faught over a woman. competition is natural in humanity, just look at boxing or football and you understand the aggression of men. religion just provides a way to unite people to go to war, just like a political party would (republicans). Real religous people, which i am in no way endorsing here because my belief structure is something outside of religion, do not war. You pick the groups that fit your arguements. what about the other 60 percent of religions that dont war, like buddhist, taoist, hindu's. Its very strange to me that anyone thinks religion, besides the kamikaze muslims like bin ladin, is in any way a bad thing. Maybe the people inside of the religion obssesed with infrastructure (Catholic and Jews) abuse the power, but in their essence religions are very pure and peaceful.
I agree with just about everything you said.
I do not believe religion is a bad thing. I believe extremism in any form is a bad thing.
The problems start when you tell me, or try to get laws passed that will force me, to live by your belief structure.
Your personal beliefs are just that, and I will fight to the death to preserve your right to believe in what you choose to believe in. But that also means that you should allow me to believe in what I choose to believe in.
But as soon as you start spending church collected funds and become politically active, you have left the essence of religion, and become a salesman. Whether it is Pat Robertson or El-Sudder, when you tell me your way is the only way, and your God is the only God, I have a real problem with that.
And stopping the work on basic research, because "It is not God's will", leaves the realm of sanity in the distance in my opinion. Was it not Galileo that was condemned of heresy by the Roman Inquistion for saying the Earth travelled around the Sun?
I am probably going to get blasted for all of this, but here is my example to prove my point. Take a quick look at:
http://www.cc.org
It is the web address for the Christian Coalition. There is nothing but an agenda there. I do not mean to pick on that one site. There are similar sites for just about any religion.

I think most of us know that religion is a manmade function to control the masses and some are very controlling.
But our Goverment is not, repeat not, suppose to make policies based on any religion. So why and when are we going to realize we are in the 21 century.
