When I got my license I was super excited to try and trick out my dad's purple Dodge Neon or my Pontiac Bonneville or my Dodge Dynasty.. I just wanted to mod whatever I was in

These guys want well paid jobs without going through the hoops required, They are content to sit idle, play video games and get drunk rather than learn anything, they are in for a big shock.

Hey 180, I see the MAJOR decline in people who have a work ethos. If society wants to make peeps dependent on others for everything, then when it happens it should be of no surprise. Our 'entitled' past couple of generations are procreating more of the same. Its a cancer that will not end in my opinion. Old saying, get used to it (although I will never 'get used to it')... Some kind of shift has to happen, I'll leave that to peeps more able to fix it, I cannot, even at the ballot box.

I can relate pretty well to this post age wise. Growing up my family was better off than most my parents and my step parents made very decent incomes and didn't spend every waking hour at work so for that I'm lucky! My dad tried for years to get me into sports and Boy Scouts all of which I had very little interest in. I think a lot of which was caused by the pressure from him making me do it versus me wanting to do it. I grew up in the video game era and I spent a lot of my child hood and in the winter months still spend a lot of time gaming. Gaming is a very a competitive sport for lack of a better word. I am into first person shooters and in order to win and be competitive it takes a lot of collaboration between you and your team mates its a very social experience. I blame gaming for my love of cars I started playing grand tourismo and NASCAR games when I was 7 and I have been hooked ever since. In the 5th grade I couldn't spell the word orange but I knew that a McLaren f1 did 0-60 in 3.2 seconds and had 618hp with a top speed of 243mph. I have had a subscription to road and track since I was 9! Some where in my parents attic lies a collection of plastic, die cast and matchbox cars that would rival jay Leno's collection. I don't feel like cars today are cool like they used to be; I blame that on the cost associated with them, and the fact that mpg is more appealing than HP and torque. Can one of you older gents tell me what a home say 1500sqft cost in 1970 and what a mid grade car cost. Today a new car is a third the price of house and carries an equal payment. Another factor is warranties you can hardly touch a new vehicle with a wrench without voiding the warranty on it and voiding the warranty on vehicle costing 30 grand is a pretty stupid thing to do IMHO.

I found some numbers accurate or not I'm not sure
Average price of a median home in 1970 was 23000 a new vehicle was 3700
Average price of a median home in 2010 was 184000 a new vehicle was 29000
Median income 1970 $9600
Median income 2010 $26000
Now I would have to say for the median income of 2010 it should be double because in most cases your spouse is also working.

Another factor not considered might be student loans I still owe 36000 of the original 68000 so that alone cost me 600 a month.

I gave $55k for my 1800 sqft ranch in 1981 at 13% interest. I gave $2700 for my used 1969 Z-28 in 1972. I don't remember the interest rate on the car, but the payments were $55.00 a month. Inflation....I would think so.

I totally agree with the subject and points made here. Youths today look for immediate gratification. The eletronics on today's cars are too expensive and complicated for them to be shade tree mechanics while Ipods and cell phones offer them escape for about $100/month or less if mommy and daddy have them on their plan.

That is exactly the reason Molly's engagement ring should be done in the next week or two

Dave and Franc certainly gave their encouragement at several different meetings

Oh yeah, a total surprise, good thing she doesn't look at the forum LOL

You're focused on the ring?

It sounds lovely and personal with the custom design,,,,but

Molly is the gem, another of which, you won't find if you looked for 100 years.

Not if you consider my boy. He's waiting, with bated breath, for the delivery of his squeaky new 2013 Challenger SRT 8. And every one of his childhood buds are car, or truck, guys as adults.

It may have to do with being raised these days in either an urban or rural environment.

Maybe?

You humble us, Franc, thanks for the kind words That is the best part about Molly and I, we have both known for a long time we were going to spend the rest of our lives together, but since we have to pay for the wedding, we wanted to get the house, garage, 3 cars, finished basement, etc. all taken care of so we could do it right

I hate to say it since I'm basically from the generation that that article is talking about, but it's honestly pretty close to dead on. I think the only reason that I actually do things for myself is because my parents are older, in their 60's, and I'm 19. Just like with any parents, the kid will always look up and try to act like their parents, and that is why I think that I am different from most kids my age. I've gone through 3 cars, and each of them I have always enjoyed modding and working on. However, it's hard to find guys my age that actually enjoy working on or at least talking about cars. I wish that more people my age were more interested in cars, but I'm glad that I am, because boy are they fun. I thank my Dad for showing me what true hard work is, and of course all of the stories that he has with his fast muscle cars, a 1965, and 67 corvette, which he only paid $4000 for the pair in the 70's. But as for me, I've got a Crossfire as a hot rod, hah.

That is a rather clever way to prove your first assumption was correct.

As for the understood attraction,,,,,,,We can relate. Cathy and I both knew we would be together with in minutes of meeting. ( OK, she knew, I feared it. I got over it)

We met Christmas day. As it turns out,,,,Our first presents to each other.

We both hope you and Molly are equaly blessed.
