All,

Over the last 12 months or so, the steering wheel has slowly become misaligned (the center is no longer perfectly horizontal when driving straight). Is there a safe way to realign the steering wheel and is this something that should be performed by a novice?

Sounds to me like you have a problem or need an alignment. I don't think this would be a DIY project.

 

Alignement for sure.....

 

Before you get a realignment, this is a common problem that happens in the steering column, there is a bolt that becomes loose, all you have to do is re-tighten the bolt, the car's wheel will feel like a brand new rack and pinion.

I will be sure to check on the bolt and if all looks good, I will have the alignment checked. Could you give me a little more info on where I might find this bolt?

This requires removal of the airbag unit and should therefore not be taken lightly.

Steps are located in the repair manual pdf elsewhere in this forum.

 

the connection is on the steering shaft, check the online repair manual for how to get access. I think it's located further down the column so you may NOT have to remove the air bag.

it is highly unlikely that it's a loose bolt. The way you are describing it, you need an alignment, or rotate the tires left to right.

 

A loose NUT might be involved here ???

you guys should do a search regarding the loose steering wheel if you want more info.

 

i have the same problem with my steering wheel. i dont know how to fix this. when i drive at low speeds the steering wheel has a mind of its own it goes from left to right especially if am little faster and have to make a sudden stop at the light. what can be the problem? alignment or loose bolt
