Default Map light replacement

Has anyone replaced the map lights? Just purchased a 05 Roadster. Driver side map light is out. Removed the large plastic shroud that covers both lights. Then there is a little dome like diffuser. Tried to get this out...afraid I'm going to break it. Any secrets? Also, what bulb number/type is it.

Thanks much

Were you able to get to the bulb....and remove the small, half circle shroud?

It is a 194 bulb and its real easy to do. Just get a credit card or something like that and pull the clear lense off. After that look up inside of it and you will see two screws. Take out both screws and pull the unit out. Then you will see the two plactic things and you just twist them out. After that you can pull the buld out of the plastic clip and replace it. Its real easy i did my a week ago and replaced them with a led light. It gives it a nice look there just not real bright.

You get the bulb at Wal-mart or any auto store! Real easy to replace, just follow cassidyrj1's guideline.

I replaced mine with 2 12 SMD LED panel lights. Quite a bit brighter than stock. Like these:

New 12 SMD LED Car Dome Light Bulbs Festoon T10 WHITE:eBay Motors (item 270407335573 end time Jun-18-09 22:31:39 PDT)

I used these first:

And I bought the 20 pack. I use the on all of the vehicles! Courtesy lights, doors, side markers. Nice.

I went to O'Reilly's auto parts here in Griffin, GA and they have clear 194 bulbs, two for $3.

But what REALLY surprised me was that they have red, orange and blue versions as well - same price.

In keeping with my **** compulsion to keep the car "factory", I went with clear. Now to figure out, from the posts above, how to change the burnt out one.

I also just bought a 2005 Roadster - map light does not go on when doors are open. Slide switch does operate passenger side light. Is this a recurring problem? Also trunk lights both out. Is there an overall problem with OEM lamps?

I did a "how-to" write up a few years ago. I replaced my bulbs with red LEDs, but the procedure would work if you wanted to still use bulbs.

Be sure your rear hatch is closed tight. My wife is bad about trying to let the hatch down lightly, it doesn't close all the way and your dome light will stay lit; When you slide the switch it will go off. But of course then it is in the wrong position to work when you open the door. Please check your rear hatch and be sure it is completely closed tight. Then be sure you have the sliding switch in the correct position.

A #2825 bulb looks identical to the #194 but puts out 5W whilst the #194 only produces 3.8W. The #194 bulb was dimmer than the OEM bulb which burned out so I put in a #2825 which seemed to duplicate the light output of the OEM bulb.

Just so the 2825 is not too hot.

It's not. I think it's actually the same bulb that came with the car originally. The OEM bulbs don't have any numbers written on them. I still have an original bulb on one side and the #2825 matches it exactly in brightness. The #194 was very obviously dimmer.
