Default Auto Dimming Rear View Mirror Questions

A few months ago the auto dimming function of my rear view mirror failed. it looks like the mirror shown below, though the dark ellipse is larger on mine.

1) What caused this failure?
2) I am looking to buy a used mirror from a wrecker. Are the housings of rear view mirrors all the same color? (And thus independent of the car's interior/exterior colors.)

Thanks

Yes they all are the same color and were available for Mercedes SLK230 and SLK320 2001-2004 and only for the 2004 Crossfire. They are not hard to find but might be expensive.

I found one in a wrecking yard on a 2005 Crossfire coupe. I took it and the mounting button, unplugging it from the harness under the Homelink and dome light.
My SRT6 convertible is not accessible to me until January. It had the non-auto-dimming mirror which fell off, button and mirror both. I am hoping it has the plug for the dimming mirror, but if not I see a thread here where a forum user installed one using his own wiring due to no harness plug available. In that thread he mentions that he had been told that the plug did exist in those models.
Do you know if the plug for an auto-dimming mirror exists in all models regardless of mirror type!

I think the only year Crossfires had the auto dimming mirror was in the 2004 models

I fitted auto dimming rear view mirrors on 1 '05 Limited Coupe, 1 '05 SRT6 Coupe and 1 '05 Limited Roadster. None had the connection plug on the wiring harness. I added the correct connector to the SRT6 harness and spliced into the Homelink wiring on the others.
