Default Land Rover Defenders...where to buy from outside the US and how much?

Does anyone here from the UK or elsewhere know about how to buy Defenders from abroad, and about how much they cost?

I like the look of the Defender 90, but here in the US there are not many around, and the ones that are around are going for Porsche 993 prices. Totally overpriced.

I am playing devil's advocate here, but I have had a friend who has restored multiple 90's with his father. These cars draw a premium price and have for years, and somehow you thnk you can buy one in a foreign currency (exchange rates and all) and then ship it for less than you can buy one in the states??

Sorry but unless they are giving them away elsewhere, which I doubt, I think you are out of luck.

Just my opinion, not meant to discourage, just my realist side taking over.....

Good point - although - no offense to people who restore Defenders for a living - but their purpose in life is arbitrage and it's mostly because of them that the prices are artificially inflated.

I know for a fact that prices of Defenders are much, much lower outside of the US - simply because there is more supply. Case in point - when my little brother came back from medical missions in Ethiopia, he knew personally of several well-used Defenders selling for several thousand dollars - beat up, but definitely working and very cheap. The question I have is, instead of outlets like Dupont Registry which is basically a marketplace for people who think they can charge $40,000 for a 20 year old Defender 90, where are the real Defenders being sold - the ones that are coming out of third world countries?

The cost of Land Rover spares make the Crossfire spares look cheap by comparison.

Welcome to MOD Sales Online - Military Vehicles for Sale - Ex MOD Land Rovers for Sale - #29739 - LAND ROVER 90. DIESEL, HARD TOP, DIRECT GOVERNMENT SALE#

They are cheap here as they are made locally. This is how to buy - this one has done less than 5000Km and is less than £2000. Ship to New York for around £1000. Most of these end up abroad.

SEE THIS GIVE AWAY Left hand drive brand new - ordered by UK Military and not required!

I stand corrected, good luck, and if you end up doing it, let us know what it costs to keep that British thing running

One other quick point - The UK Defence disposal route also provides all the spare parts to keep these vehicles going. Parts can be crated up and shipped anywhere. I reckon there is a business opportunity in the USA specialising in Land Rovers and parts supply as they are so cheap to buy here and ship out. Containers are so cheap! Food for thought

Steve,

Thanks, I'm in talks with a registered importer and the broker in the UK now. Some of the lower cost exmods look VERY rough. HOWEVER the difference between a 3000 GBP and a 4000GBP exmod is huge. The extra 1000GBP seems to buy Defenders that are in much better shape, no body filler, only a few dings, etc.

The only thing I'm a little leery about now is the 2.5 NAD, but as long as it can last for two years, I'll be happy.

Do you mind if I PM you with some more questions since you are a UK guy?

No prob - feel free, I have all the info you would need. The 2.5 deisel will last for ever, over here there are lots of these vehicles on our roads used by farmers and other "hard users" and they are often 20 years old! A Land Rover literaly never dies, it just gets a cllean up and the odd service. They are very easy to work on as everything is held on with nuts and bolts. A good Land Rover is like a Golden Retriever - a friend for life!
