Default Totaled 2004 XF - Heartbroken

Hi all! Thanks for being here for me to help me fix my sticky key problem by myself, and make it thru the 2 months of mystery no start. On Wednesday we were involved in a collision, and unfortunately, she didn't make it. Insurance says she's totaled. Confused as to whether sell her to a scrap yard (tears) or dismember her and sell her that way. My mechanic wants to give me $500 for the engine. Fair? Can you make money scraping her yourself? I can probably make a deal with my mechanic if so. He a Mercedes guy. Anyway, please let me know your thoughts. It has the red/black leather inside, perfect condition, no peeling paint anywhere. Damn, im going to miss her!!! Thank you!

So sorry to hear that. If you decide to part it out , the insurance will probably give you less if you keep the car. I think $500 for the engine is probably a fair price . Do you want to deal with disassembling it and selling and shipping the parts ? Someone on the board might be willing to buy the whole thing from you . Good luck

Thank you! I'd rather not have to bother with having my friend disassemble it, so if someone would like to buy it from me, that'd be great.

Very sorry for your loss
I hope you weren't injured
Some people buy the car back from the insurance to salvage it for parts and others take the full pay out and walk away
If you buy it back for salvage you must remember you need a place to keep it and there's a lot of time and taking parts off and sending them to people and being sure you get paid fairly for them
My best to you and I hope you will look for another crossfire to replace the one you've just lost

There was a post on here the other day and the poster said he had made $8,000 on selling the parts. Of course it all depends on what you pay your insurance company for the wreck. A car of mine was wrecked and the insurance company offered me some money, I told them it was not enough but that money plus my wreck would settle the deal. They agreed and I came out of it OK. Basically I sold the trim, and lights and a few other items. You need somewhere to strip the car which can be a problem, the mechanic might be the solution there.

I've already purchased the car, so I'm OK. Just don't know what to do now. My son was going to find the parts and help fix it, until he found they are hard to come by so he's decided to buy me a car.
im sure salvage yards give you next to nothing and I know us XR lovers are always needing something which is why I came here.

If you take it to a junk yard the gasoline tank must be drained/empty. I was offered $250 for a totaled Ford Escort that was still driveable.

It's a shame what little damage it takes to total these cars. Too bad you don't live close by, from what I can see I probably have all the parts to fix your car. Good luck with your search, I'm sure you'll find a nice one.

to some a car is a car,,, but in reality a car is something to go from point to point but to some of us the car is the point
wish u were not so far away we could use the parts,,, and maybe rebuild it with a V8 in it. it would then have a rebuild title unless you did not give the title to the ins....do u have the title? it would cost over 800 to ship it to fl

Did you have insurance on the Crossfire for loss ?
They will certainly pay you the value for the car if you had coverage for a loss.
Even a 2004 certainly must be worth a few thousand dollars for total loss payable to you by your insurance company

So, unfortunately, I'm embarrassed to say I didn't have insurance on my baby. I barely drove it, maybe less than 2,000 mi the last 2 years because I've been waiting on disability and just couldn't afford it. If I could, I'd have rather gone without health insurance to cover it, but that just wasn't an option. So, yes, I do have the title and I just don't have the money to fix it. My mechanic says the frame isn't bent, (the air bags didn't deploy), but the hood, headlights, radiator, electric cooling fan and misc hoses are going to cost a couple thousand that my son says he'd rather buy me a new car, than find the parts and ship them to me. He's in the army in TX, getting ready to leave for Germany in June and doesn't really have the time to hunt down the parts and send them to me in AZ. I thought my mechanic would want to help piece out the car for 50/50, but he said no. Unless its something simple I can get, I'm afraid I'm going to have to send her off to the salvage yard, which to me feels like putting down your ole hound. Just heartbreaking, but nothing I can do. Wish I could turn back time. Y'all have NO IDEA what this car meant to me. The last of "my" life, before I got sick, had to stop working, lost my house, had to put my dog down because she got cancer -- this was it. The LAST of "me", But, upward and onward, as they say...the play must go on!!!!

Glad you are ok.

"but the hood, headlights, radiator, electric cooling fan and misc hoses"

Headlights seems to be the harthet to find.
looks llookmoat damage was in center ?
how bad of shape are the headlights ?
If just some mounting bracket broke, can be epoxied back.

The body parts and radiator and support.
1st call around to local you pull apart and other salvage yards and ask them if the have any Chrysler crossfires.
you pull apart are cheaper, but you get the part off the vehicle, usually there are people hanging out there you can pay them some to take part off for you.

If your mechanic happened to give you a list of the parts you need then that makes things easier for you, and if you find a crossfire at a salvage yard you know what to get, then o line and Ebay for others.

Sellers on Ebay selling parts off a wrecked crossfire you can send them a message asking for other parts and pricing.

Hope everything works out for you.

SoonersFan,

I'm truly sorry to learn of all your troubles;but I'm encouraged by your healthy upbeat attitude "But, upward and onward, as they say...the play must go on!!!!" I DO have a sense of what that car meant to you, but it's a car and you sound very focused on keeping your priorities right. Good luck in your efforts going forward and God bless.

Regards,
