Question Drive Shaft Loop Needed to Drag

Planning on going to San Antonio Raceway (IHRA). All cars running faster than 13.99 need a Drive Shaft Loop. Please help me find one for the crossfire? Weld on or bolt on? I would like something light weight, painted etc.

"The NHRA requires all cars that run 13.99 or faster to have a drive shaft safety loop that meets general regulation number 2:4."

Why driveshaft safety loops? In case of u-joint or driveshaft failure, driveshaft safety loops keep the driveshaft from whipping.

Is it NHRA or IHRA? Your quote has NHRA. I run at a NHRA track and they don't require the drive shaft loop..... and I am well below 13.99...

Does the one in your pic not fit the Crossfire?

You already have them. They are not loops per say but I can tell you after destroying a driveshaft, nothing is getting out of the tunnel with the safety plates bolted in. There are two of them, one for the front half of the driveshaft and one for the rear. Take your vehicle to a shop, put it on a hoist and take pictures. They might let them count and if they don't, explain to them that a drive shaft hoop will offer no more protection than what is already on vehicle. Or tell them you installed driveshaft hoops and when they see the little bars going across, they might not be the wiser.

Thanks for the posts! The track is IHRA.

I'm away from my car until APR, but I'm getting things ready. I have to get a nitrous bottle blow-off cap as well. Do I need anything else? Do you guys have a picture of the Drive Shaft?

No you don't. I'll try to find my NHRA rule book but not for our cars. I've raced at Divisionals which is like a 5 state race and my car always passed tech fine.

Good, I dont want to add 10 LBS of steel to my car anyways. If I got to the test and tune night, most likely they won't inspect me right?

No you should fly through tech pretty easy unless it has something to do with your NOS. Not one tech guy notices our lug bolts are not studs with lug nuts. That's the most obvious violation that our cars factory have. Not much you can do about that.

when we went to a shootout in OK, the tech inspector got us for wheel studs and blowdown tube. we removed the bottle and got the wrench and showed him they were lug bolts. He'd never seen wheels held on with bolts, reguardless we passed tech. And ive had a tech look at the driveshaft and pass it with oem equipment

That's nice! I really don't want to drive 3 hours to the track to have them send me home because of these rules. The NX nitrous bottle cap is only $30. Any body else had this?

Here you go http://www.nhra.com/tech_specs/sport...C_Rulebook.pdf

It's a 2008 rule book but the driveline section is the same. I'm still looking for my 2010 paper rule book. 13.99 and quicker only if your running slicks. Which you aren't running slicks, drag radials are not slicks. 11.49 or quicker if running street tires. Which you are not going to run under 11.49.

On this pdf it's on page 35.

Sorry Super, the weight has NO effect. The mass and thus the interia is the only thing that matters, helium filled car would add to you mass and slow you, not assist you. Woody

Ok the mass of helium is less than the atmosphere, but less weight only helps because mass and inertia are interconnected in this universe.

Woody
