Shifter knob pops off. Anyone?
When I first got my 6-speed, the ****/boot popped off when I pulled up to get her in reverse. In a very technical manner, I slammed it back into place, where it has remained until now.
All of a sudden, the whole shebang pulls off; I look like Curly in that biplane when Moe says "Pull out the clutch!"
There is no way to look cool when you yank the whole transmission out while trying to back out of a parking slot, top down.
Amazingly, beating it with my paw hasn't solved anything.

I have that same problem til this day and I always knew how to work around it, I also need a solution. I will help find one. FYI, some people ask questions here, because they may not have a clue where to start a search....So waisting a comment to tell someon to do a search is pretty rude.

I searched every related thread. I learned that several owners had this problem; that it is claimed by some that the dealer was supposed to try to pull the **** off prior to delivery, and to fix it if necessary; that in one instance, Chrysler paid for body damage incurred when one of us backed in to something after yanking the shifter free from its moorings; and, that one poster fixed his by tightening the "cone nut". The cone nut guy gave no further details.
Turn the black plastic retainer nut right below the leather. It is a compression fitting that grips the shaft.
See my installation pictures in this thread.

I'm not the sharpest bulb on the tree, mechanically speaking. I thought the fix would require tools. IT DOESN'T.
When the little ******* pops off again, here's the move:
Pop it back on.
Hike the leather skirt up out of the way, like on prom night.
Grab the round gadget that's below the shifter **** with your bare mitts.
Twist it clockwise, but good . Or counter-clockwise, I forget.
Now is a good time to clean the leather skirt.
Snap the base back in place.
Next time, don't pull so hard going into reverse, Hercules.
