Mystery no start issue
Guys, I'm stuck (literally in my driveway) and need some help! I've got the same issue-turns over three times, begins to fire, then dies. After that, nothing when I turn the key unless I disconnect the battery and/or wait a while, then the same thing. I've read the entire thread here, plus anything else I can find on the site. I've re-soldered the relays (or, rather, a pro did), checked the battery for full charge, tried both key fobs, and nothing helps. Could it be the transponder ring itself, and is there a test for it? Is there anything I'm missing or something else I can try? I'm out of ideas, myself, and about to give it over to the stealership.
Thanks.
Thanks.
Yes, 112K, as of now. I've never changed the CPS. Sometimes it turns over, briefly starts, then immediately stops. Other times, nothing at all. Also, it is not throwing any codes, before or after trying to crank, etc. I've got the hood up now, so I'll see if there's a test for the CPS and repost.

And "checking the battery for a full charge" is a waste of time.
If the battery is over three years old and the car cranks over, 'kiind of starts' and then dies - change the battery.
If the battery is a White "Varta" battery it should have been changed about two years ago.
Sounds like a bad battery to me.

The starter needs more power than anything else, so if it cranks consistently then the battery is fine.
My guess is one of the sensors, crank or camshaft or a fuel problem, pump maybe.
Of course he could be out of gas as well, it's happened.
Anything else may be hard to nail down.
You might want to check the cables and grounds for good contacts. After those miles the cables may be corroded inside the insulation.

But I have noticed it seems to crank a second or two longer this last week or so before firing.. Might have to pull that Advanced Auto cps and drop the bosch in just to see.. not like it's more than a 10-15 minute job taking my time now..

I would expect more than troubles at a cold start up from a faulty CPS.
The battery is less than a year old. There was no slowing of cranking speed and even cranking it with the charger at "start" made no difference. I think we can rule that out. Not a bad idea, though! Everything is nice and clean with the wiring, but I ran out of daylight before checking the CPS. These are the times I love my TR6. Nice and simple.
My money is on fuel delivery. Filter or pump. With 112k. miles, has the filter ever been changed? Rob at Needswings has a nice little fuel pressure gauge that you can install at the end of the fuel rail and see what's going on.
preventive maintenance on a 112k car for me would be to go ahead and replace the fuel pump/filter and the cps. You can't go wrong here....it isn't the battery...

AND THE WINNER IS.....................
Well, not me, that's for sure. Turns out it's the SKREEM / halo ring.
Thanks for all the advice, everybody. If there's a silver lining to this cloud, I didn't even know about the relay module issue before this happened. Now I have a re-soldered module that isn't going to cause a second breakdown.

The three starts before nothing should have hinted to us this was the problem, as that's the anti theft system.
I read through the forums before I posted. BTW, the problem is the SKREEM module itself, not the ring.
I have been having a more and more frequent problem with my 04 6spd. most of the time its when i pull up to a stop light but it has happened while im driving to. my car sounds like it stralls then takes abt a good 5 secs for all of my caution lights to come on. if i leave my key on my fan and lights all stay on. i work at autozone so of course ive tested my battery and alternator and everything tested fine. im following the fuel pump relay but the confusing part to my special case is that it always starts back up if i get a jump from a friend. hoping for some closure bc ill be driving the xfire 1500 miles in 2 weeks and not looking forward to counting how many times it dies on the highway with me doing 85 mph.

Does it have to be a friend or would a stranger work too?
I'd say this is a real big clue where the problem is..
