Default Throttle body cleaning

Is this something I need to do ?

If so, how and what should I use ?

Noticed some surface staining when doiung my SL55 Y pipe upgrade. Old carb cars I used to buy a spray can to squirt down, but not sure if it is safe to do this or what to use these days.

Also, how can I open the throttle with the engine running and squirt down the intake anyway ??? Damn drive by wire ! Give me a throttle cable any day.

Can you push the butterfly valve with your finger and make it move?
Or, get a friend to hit the gas redal.

Most dealerships carry a special spray can, which you spuirt down into the manifold. The contents inside the can must be a heavy degreaser, but it foams up inside the manifold. I've never had it done but I guess it works. not sure I want to fill my manifold full of foam spray and then push all that crap through the pistons.

If you want to avoid the oil coking issues that are associated with PCV systems you might want to make your own oil trap.

I like comressed air oil water separators, they sell them at Home depot or Mc master carr. I use the largest possible one available, and run two in series.

I just changed the oil yesterday on my truck, which currently is using two inline compressed air water separators, you'll be amaized at how well they work. In fact I was surprised that the first pcv trapped a couple teaspoons full of water and the last in series filter captured at least 8 ounces of oil. I will be mounting two on my crossfire next.

edit: try and find one with a built in regulator that will allow you to adjust the airflow.

If you're seeing build-up on the outside of your TB butterfly valve I would bet the inside of your intake plenum is really dirty... I posted a photo essay when I cleaned mine last summer... You can't do it like an old carb car... because the MAF is in the intake throat and the minute you remove that to get to the buttlerfly valve the engine will die...

Do a search, I don't know what the topic of my post was, but there are some very detailed photos of what the inside of the intake plenum looks like before and after cleaning...

BE CAREFUL!!!!!!!!!!

Ok yes you can clean your throttle plate. remove and clean with parts cleaner and/or solvent.

Do not use chemical cleaners that you suck in through a vacuum line to clean the intake or valves, AKA induction services/fuel injector service. The only reason this should be done is by the dealer for a repair.

The reason behind this......
The solution that is used burns kinda like nitrous... which is not good. they can cause exessive cylinder temp's,, and cause cylinder wash.. this can lead to rings scoring the cylinder walls and detination. most of the chemicals have alot of ether in them and problems can arise..

Some of the bottle even say don't use on these engines. I remember neon and all nissians where on that list...

Remember just be careful and if you do use them take it slow.. dont just dump alot in at once...... Thanks

Tried it on an older car and it blew a bunch of crap out the back. Seafoam sez to put 1/3 in the gas tank, 1/3 in the crankcase and 1/3 gets trickled through the carb/throttle body. I didn't do the crankcase part. Just poured that down the carb. Did it work?
Beats me!

I'd love to clean out the inside top part of the plenum but I'm scared of taking it apart, I realize that spraying fluids down in there isn't anywhere near as good though. If the inside of the plenum really needed cleaning how could I tell"?

I'm sure the previous posters know a lot more than I do. I would just re-iterate don't shoot that old carb cleaner down anything that isn't a carb. That acetone and M.E.K can mess up the newer systems. They make new stuff for F.I. engines. Be sure to use that! If you're just wiping the ridge off with a rag you can use stronger stuff but if you're shooting a blast down the throttle body use the new stuff.

These are new so call pm him and refer this posting, stainless media and very low restriction, unlike the paint air line dryers that you can not blow thru.
