There is a possiblity that the FSS will not calculate correctly......if you don't use the FSS, then it doesn't matter. Definitely less lubrication at startup with 10W40 and with colder temps in VA...not a good thing.

I don't understand what the aversion to running the recommended oil in the Crossfire is.....amazes me.

I've never understood why people fret so much over oil. Some engineers that get paid a lot more than I do and have a bunch of framed papers saying they went to school for this stuff figured these things out for us. And then put it in that amazing thing called an owners manual for us to read.

I have a Saturn Ion Redline. The manual recommends an oil meeting GM Spec 4718M. There are like 7 diffrent oils that meet that spec. All of which are 5w-30 weight oils. That's what I run and I just don't worry about it. It works and it lubes the engine.

Actually, a lot of thought and engineering did go into the FSS, if you are inclined at all to use it. It is calibrated to measure contaminants in Mobil1 0-40W, weighed against your driving habits, and determine your next service interval. See the Sticky under the Technical & Modifications Forum.

It is a fairly sophisticated feature if you choose to use it. Or not.

I should mention this is not Fernandez. This is a buddy of his fromwork.

I know that is what I was talking about. I use the GM Oil life monitor in my Saturn for my oil change intervals because as you and I said a lot of engineering went into it by a lot of guys that know what they are doing.

Same as figuring out suggested oil viscosity for a given engine.

All I was saying it just amuzes me sometimes that people stress so much over oil choice and oil change intervals when all that work and thought has already been done for us.

I see the same things over on redlineforums.com

sea level and warm climate usually go with 5w-30 in the slowfire, always use synthetic oil to avoid coking and plugging the motor oil galleys

Hey Folks, I own (almost) a $45,000 sticker price automobile, which I did not pay that much for of course, with a handbuilt AMG $13,000 engine. Someone way above my pay grade decided that 0W40 MOBIL 1 was the oil to use. I am not going to bet my Blue Boy against a few $$$$ for some cheap a** sludge builder to save a few bucks. To each their own, but I just bought 17 qts of Mob 1 @ Pep Boys for $6.99 each. That's enough for 2 oil changes, for a total of 15,000 miles book recommended. I cheat a little and change the filter at 5,000 miles add some, and then change both oil and filter at 10,000 miles or less. So what's the problem? That's a year's worth of driving for about $125. I don't hear about anyone using 87 or 89 octane..

seriously?? thats probably the second-most asked question on the forum. people think they win if they save $2 or $3 on a tank... they always forget about that $13K engine.

OMG this has got to be the most abused/controversial 'feel good' thing with engines! I believe you should spend your money the way YOU want to, its your money!
