Default My iPod Installation

Just got my iPod hardwired in to my car. Unfortunately the stock headunit does not have a CD changer controller or auxiliary input built in, so I had to go the FM modulator route (which is only FM quality, but with perfect reception). It sounds good, except for a little bit of static when no music is playing, but thats because of the FM modulator. Now I have about 5000 songs (20 gigs, it can hold 40 gigs) with me wherever I go. Here are some pics:

Nice. I'm going to mount my XM Roady the same way (with the same bracket).

Hopefully, mightyjlr is still around. The bracket looks good, but how did you connect your iPod to the bracket?

I've had my Upsolute chip installed in Dallas for $ 425 instead of $ 400 the fact that Jason did it on a Saturday..I guess. I'm still trying to figure out the significant changes in my Crossfire from the stock with regards to mileage and speed.

Right now my brain is suggesting that my Crossfire is more torquey than before but this is very much subjective. I still have to do some testing and might buy a G-Tech Pro than have it dynoed.

Dave.... That looks very much like my G-Tech Pro. The only real difference is the G-Tech attaches to the suction mount w/velcro. I got the G-Tech for 49.00 0n Ebay (New)

I got the iTrip FM transmitter whilst in the US last week. I've not got around to trying it yet. I'll let you know after the weekend.

My wife has an iPod and we use the Belkin wireless FM broadcaster. In the Crossfire, when using the power adapter for the Belkin, the iPod gives some pretty good reception. In her car and my old car, the reception was sketchy at points. We live near Washington D.C., so there are a lot of stations all across the FM band which makes it hard to get an unused frequency. There must be something with the Crossfire factory stereo unit that makes it pick up the Belkin FM transmission pretty well..when the Belkin is powered by the adapter, not batteries. With batteries, there is much more static.

Give it about another year and there should be several iPod compatable car headunits. So far, Alpine is the only one with plans for an iPod specific aftermarket adapter.
One more note about the FM transmitters. They will never be anywhere near CD quality sound. Only a direct link to the iPod's dock connector will give CD quality output. To do that, you'd need a special iPod dock to RCA adapter and RCA/Aux imputs on the headunit.

I've reviewed both the iTrip and the belkin FM thingy and both are good but in urban areas there is a lot of breakthrough from local stations (FM is so crowded in London).

www.lordpercy.com/belkin_tunecast.htm

I would go for a hardwire if at all possible.

And Cyril thats one nice setup, i though i had a lot of gadgets in the car...lol anyhow the TomTom GO unit is going in soon so that'll be another screen!
