Default New Problem #1... Popping Noise

Hey Gang,

Has anyone experienced this:

Some times, not often, when I pull up to a stop light and are sitting there I hear a single "pop" kind of noise. It can also be felt and seems to come from behind me and below the floorboard. The noise can be loud or faint. It hapens after I've come to a full stop and have been sitting there a short time.

Anyone experience this, if so what can you tell me? I hope this is not going to be one of those things the dealer said he can't dublicate.

Thanks for any inputs.

I hear something that sounds familiar to what you described. I noticed that it usually happens when I have less than 1/2 tank of gas. I have determined that my noise os fuel sloshing in the tank when I stop. As long as the tank is relatively full I never hear it.

WMichaels,

Nope, it's definetlty a single "pop" kind of noise, sort of like a single backfire... sometimes loud or sometimes quieter... it can also be felt in the floorboard. :? :? :?

AZ.... That's exactly the kind of noise and the way it feels in my car. The noise comes from behind me and you feel a faint bump through the floor. It's usually just one pop unless I stop really guick from very slow speed. Like just rolling forward and slam the brakes. Then you can hear and feel the sloshing.

But, in your case, since you just had the tranny replaced, I think I would take it in and make sure everything is torqued correctly. Maybe it's a loose bolt or something related to the tranny swap.

Good luck!

I'm glad you posted this question. I've heard a popping noise coming from the pax door approx. 30 seconds to a couple of minutes after closing it. I couldn't ever tell what was causing it. A friend of mine got in the other day, closed the door....a few seconds... pop! She said she thought it was coming from the window.

Last night I was driving and there was a significant amount of road noise coming through the driver's door as if it wasn't closed all the way. So while still moving I opened the door and firmly pulled it shut. The road noise disappeared but about 10 seconds later there was this loud muffled thud/pop next to my head and behind. It sound like the window was popping into place or something.

I wondered if if this related to the window noise/window adjustment problem.

Freaky.

A problem I had was the window would go about 1/32 inch too high. When the door was closed with the window up it would catch on the drip molding. The dealer adjusted the up-stop and all is well.

In your case it sounds like yours may be just catching and then releasing and poping into place against the weather seal.

Just a guess.

WM hit it exactly. I had that problem. The window on the drivers side would hit the drip moulding, and not seal properly. Then after 20-30 seconds, it would slip into place and make a loud pop. They adjusted the window and it has not happened since.

Thanks guys. I imagine they had to remove the door panel to adjust the up-stop...?

That's right. They did it the day I took it in for the radio. They replaced the radio and adjusted the window in about 45 minutes.

AZ: I am on my first trip with my Crossfire from NC to Fl. and I have experienced the noise you talked about and was searching this site to see if anyone else has. It comes from the back, is a thump as if someone has driven into me. My wife has experienced it also. It only happens when stopped such as at a red light and is very upsetting. If no one can give me a good explanation, I will take it back for a check when I return. :?

PS: Crossing Fl. at a very fast pace in the Crossfire is like floating on air, quite exciting, even to the wife. I have only seen/talked to one other owner on the trip, while visiting a Golf supply store in Palm Bch area. -- Mighty glad to have the car even with the poping. -- Thanks Ed

Ed,

Exactly... you never know when it's going to happen but always when stopped. The loudness also varies. I guess this is going to be another thing hard to pin down like the popping out of first gear problem.

Thanks for the reply. It'll be a few weeks before I can get to the shop, but I'll keep you posted.

Everyone experiencing the "BUMP" from behind when you stop.

I have the same problem and I don't have a Xfire yet. i have a 1999 isuzu Amigo. The problem only happens when you stop. it is like someone is hitting you from behind. Isuzu supposedly decided not to fix it. They said it causes no problem to the vehicle. If anything, it is annoying. It has to do with some piece under the truck sliding back and forth. I think it is part of the suspension. (sorry I am no mechainc). I am not worried about it because it is leased and is going back. i reported, and they decided not to fix it.

OH WELL. I am sad to hear the same problem exists on the Xfire. Isuzu fixed a bunch of trucks early on, but stopped when they relalized that it is not cost effective to do a recall....

Thanks David for the research on this topic.

This car sure has it's share of stuff "that's normal" that I've never experienced in my other cars... then again this is the first German car I've owned since my VW Bug back in the 60's.

Just looking through this part of the forum...so I am a little late in posting this. But since the fuel tank is made of a somewhat flexible polymer, I think the popping from behin the driver may be caused if the tank experiences a vacuum during driving and fuel being "pumped" out and not enough air let back in to replace the fuel.
I know the car needs to have the fuel cap installed when the engine is running or it may flash the Check Engine light according to the manual.
To figure out if this is the cause of it I would consider this:
1. Does it happen after both short and long interval of driving when you guys come to a stop ???
2. Have someone open the fuel cap immediately after you run the engine at slightly increased RPM for a few minutes and listen for a hissing sound (Air rushing in)
3. Or have one of your best friends lay under the car while you run the engine through a couple minutes of RPM cycles at 1/3 full tank and check if he can see the tank walls collaps slightly ;-)

The fuel tank is metal.
The fuel tank is inside the passenger compartment. It is not visible without dissassembling the interior.
Opening the cap after starting the car will cause: p0440, p0455, p0456 to set if the evap monitor is currently running.

So much for that idea.

Hi Jamikest,

Ooops...my bad on the material and location...should have never assumed it's where it is on most other lesser vehicles....My Alfa GTV 625 has it in the same place as the Xfire then...one more reason to like both ;-)

And another small correction to my attempt at deciding whether the popping noise may come from the tank....I meant to have the cap opened immediately after the run cycle and then shutting down the engine.

The reason why I am leaning towards a vacuum issue is due to multiple makes and models where that was the cause of similar problems.

Thanks for keeping things correct Jami

I have this exact same problem. It scares the daylights out of me. Of course the service department cannot duplicate it. The other day it happened at least 10 times while stopped in extremely bad traffic for about 15 minutes. This is the most I have ever heard it. It is usually only once while stopped at a red light, and only in the afternoon when the car is hot. My car is at the dealer now. They are calling the field rep. from Chrysler to see if they know anything about it. I'm sure they have heard this before. We are not the only ones.

My Tahoe does the same thing, I'll hear it when stopped, or starting after a stop. I figured it might be the catalytic converter, though it sounds from the back. The Tahoe didn't start until this past winter, the vehicle is 3 years old.
