If you pull out the fuse panel and look down in the back you will see two buss bars with lugs and wires against the firewall. One is hot all the time and one is hot only when the key is on. Use a meter and you'll know which is which...

I'm going to answer this with reservations.....if you dont know this already, you should find someone who is to help you with your project. Not trying to be a @$$, but you REALLY dont want to create electrical problems for yourself.... they can be a nightmare to resolve later...

A buss is a distribution bar for data or signals or power.. we are talking about a power buss or distribution point.....
A lug is a bolt/screw mounted on the bar with a nut holding down the wire terminals to make contact with the buss bar....

Turn on your volt meter to DC volts at the proper range to read 12V (probably 20v range)...with the ignition OFF hold the BLACK(-) probe to the ground point on the drivers fender and then touch the RED(+) probe to one of the terminals on the left side buss.... does it show 12v? if yes, that one is hot 12v all the time. If no, turn on the key and see if it has 12v. If yes, that is the switched 12v.....

A buss (buss bar) is a conductor, typically copper, and a lug is a threaded metal nut that fits on a screw. Just to be a bit cautious, given the questions you've asked (and not to be rude) I would hope that you ask someone with experience to help you during the install of your gauges. If you do it wrong you could cause a bad situation for you and your XF.

ive hooked gauges up on plenty of cars, but they have all been mechanical. and these new ones i bought have peak, and high and low memory warnings. so once i find out which ones are which, i splice and shrink wrap them with those special wire connectors? and would anyone know an easy point thru the fire wall? and MikeR someone told me you were the guy to talk to about sending units? where could i hook up the oil pres sending unit, someone told me under the oil filter there is a place to do so? And for the water temp im gunna splice the radiator hose and buy one of those adapters, is that a smart idea?

I have run wires for gauges and switches thru the fuse comparment on the driver's side, under the hood.

Take the cover off, then pop the fuse panel out.

Now, go in the car, remove the trim from under the dash, above the pedals and the trim from the wall on the left side. If you shine strong light up under the dash, you will be able to see that light thru the bottom of the fuse box under the hood! Run your wires and put the trim back!

Worked for me. I do not intend to give a blow-by-blow description, if I can do it, ANY certified idiot can!

There is a plug in the casting below the oil filter, that is where I put mine!

Ask a mechanic, but what is the point? You want your sending unit IN THE BLOCK so you can measure the temp of the water in the water jacket.

DO a search here for "oil pressure gauge" and you'll find a post where a guy gives you the Advance Auto part number for the adapter ... along with the thread specifications for the plug.
