Default Should I buy a Battery?

I have an 05 SRT-6
Car does not start. was driving fine up until this morning when I went to start it, everything came on fine but car would not turnover. i came home from lunch got in car started fine drove around for 20 minutes then parked it. went back to work came home tried to start it again and still would not turn over.

I know this has been discussed several times on this forum so I checked the Battery which, yes it still has the factory battery, car only has 21000 miles. Took battery to autozone for testing they initially said it was low and then charged it and tested again and said it was good. installed the battery back in the car, nothing.

I pulled the RCM too and checked the solder joints, they appear to be ok. I was thinking of purchasing a battery anyway just to eliminate that as a cause, but at $154.00 I'd like to be sure about it.

Any other suggestions? I really want to drive my car again.
I was having the time of my life until today somebody please help.

YES.

$154? Where do you get your batteries?

Mine was $88 at O'Reilly's (SuperStart model 48-72). You don't indicate what year your car is, but since most are now 5 or more years old - yes, it's time for a battery.

This may or may not cure the problem... but fact is, that battery is almost certainly past it's "due date".

Thanks for the reply. $88 they quoted me $154.00 and said that was all they had for my car, which is an '05 SRT-6, I should've checked online but was close by and needed to test the battery anyway. will pick that up tommorow if I can find a store that has one.

Hate to break it to you but as long as the battery posts can be connected to the Power and Ground leads, the electron flows the same whether it be a Limited, Base or SRT. Get what battery fits, I believe size group 84?? Could be wrong on that. Mileage doesn't really matter on the car, install date however does. If you put a new battery in and it still doesn't start could possibly be the starter. Have someone turn the key to start and take a long prybar and smack the side of the starter. If it starts, then the starter is to blame.

Another thing, have the alternator load tested. As a battery gets weak, the alternator is strained weakening it as well when it tries to overcompensate for the bad batt. Take a Voltmeter (DMM) and attach the leads to the battery while engine running and set the multimeter to AC, not DC. You should read <0.3VAC, this will tell you whether the rectifier bridge within the alternator is working. If you see 4V, 8V, or 12V (Car wont's start/run) then you know those diodes inside are bad.Rebuilding an alternator is easy, time consuming, but easy DIY. Usually alternators are R&R items though, because of parts warranties in place.

If there was no click from the starter at all and everything else worked I'd say it's the RCM.

Trust me folks. You can NOT see some of the bad joints without magnification.

I have been experiencing the same problem. I put my battery on a tickle charge overnite and it has been starting fine, but I think I am going to buy a battery anyway. I did do allot of checking the forum and some shops around here and this is what I came up with if you need it in the further.

Firestone has a MTP H6 with about 640 CCA which from what I understand is the same battery that the dealers sell. Firstone sell it for about $160.00 give or take.

Firestone also sell a MTP 91 with about 700 CCA for about 115.00. It will fit into the battery mountly plate.

PEP Boys sell a Bosch 48-690B for about 100.00 the will work also, it has 690 CCA.

Sams Club sells a model # E48 it has 700 CCA which I understand will work also. The cost is 67.00 and installation is free. I forget what the brand name is, but it has the 3/96 warrenty that I was looking for also.

Hope this helps.
Larry

dont just check the battery. have it load tested. you may have a broken plate in the battery

There ya go!

There was no way I was gonna pay well over $100 for a battery. SOME things are worth spending money on, but I believe an $88 battery will be just fine for these cars. Now, mind you, I have NO intention of keeping ANY battery over 3 years old in a cantankerous car like the XF.

And I'm not picking on the XF. We (at work) learned the same lesson with my company Durango (which I am happy to report is GONE now)... it would crank over, and start, but as soon as you let go of the key, it died.
$90 tow bill and one ($70) hour of labor later, they got it running - by replacing the battery.

I'd never heard of a battery that was strong enough to turn the engine over being the reason a car would not start. Seems the ECM/PCM/etc. was seeing something it didn't like.

So for me, I'm going with a cheaper batttery (that meets the specs of the car) and replacing it every three years to avoid being stranded.
