Default Bigger Wheels Better or WORSE

General Motors is releasing it's own line of wheels 20' for SUVs and cars, because of the potential adverse EFFECTS of installing LARGER wheels and tires (increased braking DISTANCE ,added UNSPRUNG weight)

(same article) "the General also promises warranty coverage that might be voided if NON-factory wheels cause a mechanical FAILURE!

Okay... let me get this straight.

GM is going to provide "their" own brand of larger wheels = 20".

GM is going to honor the vehicle warranty for any damge caused by their larger wheels.

On the other hand, damaged caused by the same sized 20" after market wheels will not be covered under warranty.

Although by no means am I a tire or wheel expert, one thing quickly comes to mind. What kind of damage can one expect by going to a larger size wheel whether it be a GM or after market wheel that would cause warranty issues? Plus sizing today is a common practice. Unless you go real radical, I don't see a problem as to who's wheels you put on as long as they are within tolerances that would bring up warranty issuses.

Just wondering.

The aftermarket products are first after your $$s in the past few years the 20"+ wheels have come on the market and the extra unsprung weight increase can cause safty issues!ABS brakes react differently than what was expected with improper size wheels and tires.Even Dealer (auto) that put them on don't realize this!I've driven brand new autos on the lot with after market wheels and told the salesman it felt like it had no brakes! So just be careful and ask ???s'

It's a growing safety issue!!One size up may not be a huge difference of course if it added 10 or 20 feet distance to your emergency stop it could be!!

Just guessing on my here.

When people + size on tires and wheels, doen't they usually go up in wheel size and go to a lower profile tire? That would mean the weights would stay "about" the same and not add that much to the safety or warranty issue, right?

No,not wheels are made out of the same metals? Not all tires weight the same? This is the reason that they balance a cars suspensions! And you can't trust the idiot that's selling them,he's just giving the buyer what (he) wants!Remember the Bridgestone tire problem just the WRONG air pressure killed people!
