Default IHI Supercharger

Doing a little research I came across the specs for the SRT6. Turns out the supercharger is mfg. by a japanese company IHI...

Sounds like I could install on my 2004 coupe without a hitch... Anyone got experience with this ??? I'm sure I will have to tune it for the mod. and maybe even porting it... Any other ideas or hick-ups I should be aware of ?

It is the same supercharger that is used to upgrade the SLK320 to the SLK32 AMG...

I spoke with the IHI engineer in Illinois today and he is getting me prices for hardware and plumbing as well as the mfg of the intercooler for the SRT6...

Anyone have a IHI contact in the US as the website is mostly japanese...
That'd be awesome! There were several threads in here a few months back about a bolt-on supercharger, where many of the techno details like your bore/stroke/pistons questions were also asked. On quick recollection, seems there were folks saying that the 3.2L base engine is already fairly high compression, so a bolt-on wouldn't do much without also doing other mods like you referenced. See if you can find those threads, there were some REAL gearheads posting about it (at a level way over my head), I was just following the discussion cuz I want one too!!!!

I think your best bet at this point would be to contact a reputable tuner shop and ask what their take is on adding a supercharger without doing any other major modifications to the engine.

I am prettysure that kleemann will sell you the supercharger, chip, crank intercooler, mounts and pistions that you need to do the upgrade (probably 8-9K in price), if you got the bucks and want it installed by them then they will arrange for someone to come to you if you don't want to go to them...

You will still have to yank the engine and likely balance the pistons once you get the parts - pain in the butt...

I think you'd be better off to buy the SRT.Any money you spent and it would be huge, would be a waste!Absolutly no value used!At least the SRT would have all factory GOODIES!!!

As most of you know I have a Superchargerd LT1 Corvette. It is about 480 horse on a bad day on cool days I'm hitting close to 522 however this is using a Vortech V1 S trim

Where the real issue comes in is the amount of boost... my Vette and the crossfire are pretty close in terms of compression ratio. Ideally you would want *** to be in the neighborhood of 9:1

I have a stock short block ( vette) and I run up to 8 pounds of boost, in doing that I had to go to larger injectors and had to back the timing back a bit.

I would highly suggest the use of an intercooler as well this helps in terms of horsepower and timing. You can go with the screw or fixed CFM supercharger ( I've actually looked into this as well ) I would say that 8 poundss would be the very max , I'm not sure what they rate the IHI's at I'm thinking probably around 4-6 pounds?

I would be more than happy to steer anyone through this if they so desire, I have had my car supercharged for over 3 years now.

As you all know the sky is the limit as to how much you want to dump into the car.. forged pistions... crank, rods etc.

But keeping it simple you could net you with about 300 horse witha boost of 6 pounds. Keep in mind someone from upsolute or superchips or who ever would have to burn you a new chip to compensate for the timing... the fuel can be modulated off a 2 BAR MAP sensor...

Hope this helps... feel free to contact me or email me if you decide to go further...

Mo

I think Mo hit the nail on the head about compression limiting the amount of boost you can pump into the enigine. Our engines have 10.0:1 compression. A little too high, IMO, to really get the most out of a blower. You can make it work, with reduced boost... Just put a large pully on it to turn it slower. But you won't get the power of the SRT 6 unless you bring the compression down. The SRT 6 engine has 9.0:1 compression to maximize the effect of the supercharger. To me if you're going to do it then tear the motor down replace the pistons and rods and do it right. The Cams are more than likely different as well.

keep in mind our pistons may not be able to handle even the low boost from a SC. I bet the ones in the SLK32 have a much higher tolorance. I will hit up Kleeman and see if they have any suggestions.

Thanks, I'm looking at this because we race the car at Willow Springs and Button Willow and I'm having a hard time on the straights against some of the turbo's as their accelleration out of the last turn is far superior to ours

HDDP, can you post some of your racing experiences with the crossfire in the Racing forum? I'd like to know some details as to how it's comparing to other cars. Also, which turbo cars are you having trouble with? We need details so we can live vicariously through you!
Have you gotten your car chipped yet? That may help with acceleration out of the corners, until you figure out the supercharger dilema.

IHI is what mitsubishi used on the japanese spec turbos for the Lancer Evolutions before they came to America. Turbo ball bearing. Large MF's with little to no lag. Great company. Not sure how the superchargers are. Good find.

I got some info back from Kleemann...

They do not have any smaller solutions for us nor seem to plan on it. They are however way cheaper than Renntech. For their Supercharger upgrade it is $9500 + install. Typically install cost in the $1300-1500.00 range.

They also said their kompressor system will bring your Crossfire up to the
SRT-6 power levels- 330 HP and 325 TQ. Their supercharger runs 7 PSI of boost and uses a patented air to water intercooler.

Looking at their web page it seems they have their own brake system, a 330 mph speedometer and some other cool stuff too. I saw some scissor doors on a SL model and inquried about those too. They said they had only made them for the SL models and had no plans to offer scissor doors for the Crossfire. They also did not know of anyone else that offers the lambo doors for our car yet.

I think we need to hit up the turbo compaines again. I emailed all of them several weeks ago and they all said they had no plans for our car. The problem with all the compaines seems to be that we are not bugging them directly to show there is a market for upgrades on our cars. Yes, there are a lot less of our cars out there and no one has really done much for the SLK320's. Unless we all start asking for the parts we want, no one will ever produce them.

Back to the scissor doors. As high quality as Kleeman is known for, they would be the company we would probably want to make them for us. So if you really want them then send a request to them!

If there was a 4-5k kit to take it up to the 27x HP, range then I would buy that rather than trying to figure out how to pull off the stupid boomerang off the SRT-6.

What surprises me more is that DC actually thinks that people like the bastardized look of the SRT6. Maybe if it flops then they will rethink it.

Just wondering here guys... I see all this talk of super charging and what not...

I know for sure you can hook a supercharger up to this engine... BUT you can not run full boost on it! you might only be able to gain a 20 - 30hp gain... but really... that much HP is a HUGE *** difference on our light car!

BUT!

How about Turbo... much of the time its cheaper... run a smaller ratio on it also... gain the 20 - 30 hp... Anyone ever think of this? I don't know a ton about engines + turbo... so I need help with this question...

I should check with vortech it is a little different with the centrifugal but the prices would probably be less... My vettes was about 5 K I installed it myself...

The "smaller" systems run around 4K...

Pretty good guess on the 300 horse..

so 7 pounds at 330 hmmm I would not do it with out an intercooler for sure... it depends alot on how hard you plan on running the car you would definately be wanting to monitor the spark knock under boost...

The intake on my vette at 8 pounds of boost is close to 240 degrees F with out the intercooler... I literally have no room for an intercooler and certainly don't want my car ( Vette) looking like a ricer LOL with 91 octane is a killer i'm using the stock pistons and rods... i'm sure that will change eventually...

Part of the big problem is the marketing and and product base of having Crossfires... compared to mustangs and Chevy's it drives the prices up...

The other issues is the CARB at least in California... whether it is approved or not.... Thus Like Dan was saying that it may be cheaper to go with a SRT...

i have trouble pushing the vette through smog

Great thread going here... anyone with questions let me know

Mo

I agree Mo, I had one of the stunt drivers on my new show take a close look at the x-fire today during lunch. We both agreed that there is room behind the lower front grille (the honeycomb portion) for an intercooler. I surely wouldn't even think about a SC without intercooling it.

As mentioned in the earlier post, I did speak with the mfg. of the SC for the SRT and he is going to get back to me with info and price. I'm hoping to purchase the entire package that turns an SSB into an SRT.

I'll keep my fingers "CROSSED"

If not, I may have to make the plunge for the SRT... But, the damn things don't come with manual transmission. And I would die on the track with an automatic.
