Exclamation Key Won't Turn Please help...

So while i was at work today (i drive my car around to stores all day for work) My ignition froze and would not turn at all i tried to turn it for over 45 minutes to no avail. I bought some Graphite and tried to see if that would fix it but it didn't. This has happened before but never for more than i'd say 30 seconds and today it just stopped. I'm getting it towed tomorrow morning to an auto shop but Upon searching the forum i found this has been a common issue I've read the "Sticky Ignition Key Fix!!" And have a question for those who may be more experienced.
1. How hard would it be for someone who isn't very knowledgeable about cars to fix this on their own?
2. If an auto shop fixed this themselves by putting in a new ignition cylinder or whatever would this problem re appear in a few years?

I really don't want to fork out the 1k-2k this is going to cost to fix if their is a cheaper and better solution. If you guys have any help it would be really appreciated.

It came back, you should not have ignored it. Sorry your having trouble. Yes you can do it some had experiences limited to adding gas and that was about all. You can do it! If you let them at the stealership or any other shop you'll have to redo it later on, and also you'll have to deal with the separate key for the other locks. Get ir roll-backed to your home and spend the time slowly doing the sticky key fix, you'll save quite a bundle and have the confidence to tackle other studff as well. Remember to follow the instructions carefully and it'll come out A-OK. Good luck!

If you really can't handle fixing it yourself, as GG said, DO NOT go to a dealership. Instead, print out the Sticky Key Fix Tutorial and take it to an independent shop.

My guess is that they will charge you $80 to $120 an hour, for up to two hours to fix this.

The locking pin should be behind the plastic trim piece around your steering column. You may have to ~gently~ pry that trim piece back to see it. You might have to loosen the bolt in that strap clamp to free it up enough to see it.

Good luck!

Okay So the key still won't turn it appears the locking pin is flat but i couldn't get the key to turn to position 1. I removed the whole assembly and and unplugged the power source and even pushed in the medal locking thingy that goes towards the steering wheel (The steering wheel will now turn) but again can't get the key to position 1. Advice?

EDIT: Nvm once we got the spring out we could turn the key and she's running again i thought the instructions where to turn the key first so i could take it out but oh well it worked. thanks again guys and onehundred80 i think you did the write up you saved me a fortune can't thank you guys enough!

My Crossfire has done the same and the key won't turn. I just read the instructions on how to get it to run again and I will deff work on it once I get home. But my questions are:

What caused this in the first place?
How long until it locks up again?

Thank you for your time and help.

Post 10 is exactly right... but if you let a dealer fix it, the "never" changes to "about 3 years".
