Default AM Brake Noise

I have been using the Porterfield brake pads for a few months now...

and its finally getting to me... these things SQUEAL so bad its unbelievable... right when the car starts its perfectly okay... but once I start driving it around these things sound like a 92' grand am with horrid brakes! ... I can hear the echo off cars next to me and now even while i pull into my garage when my foot is off the brake I can hear a "eek" noise at certain times...

I just wanted to express to everyone even though the brake dust is gone... this problem has started up... I'm EXTREMELY unhappy with the product...

my future plans are this... 1) Order the Brembo Slotted Cryo Rotors... 2) Recieve my Braided Steel Brake Lines... 3) Take my old front pads to the dealer and have them install all the goodies plus my old pads back on there...

I'll live with the dust as long as I dont have to live with the annoying noise!!!!!

BTW how are the Rotex with brake noise? I heard the Green Stuff are the same way...

Bobafettm:
Dude,
Do the brake job yourself, it's simple.
You can save some cash and you get to say "I did it!"

Matt
P.S. PM me if you need help.

Boba I had the same problem with my green stuff pads. I used a silicone grease on the pad backs and guides and the worked for a short time but the squeel came back. Then I got some stuff at Advanced Auto parts called "Disc Brake Quiet" by CRC. It's It's a pinkish color and is a polymer that you aply and let setup before you reinstall the pads. Man, this stuff is awesome. I haven't heard a squeel or a squeak from my brakes for over 3 months.

OOOO WM I think I'll have to grab some of that stuff and try it out! ... Most likely i'll wait a bit ... I will hopefully be ordering my Brembo Rotors in a few days!

I know I could install them myself... but I wasn't sure about the Xfire ... I've done brakes with my father on my GM cars... but this is different and much more scary to me... either though I know its the same thing... I never wanta screw something up...

I think you'll have to take the pads off to put that CRC stuff on, and then reinstall, so if you're not sure about how these might help...

Always glad to help out a fellow Crossfire owner (even ones who do things behind the wheel I don't particularly agree with :P :P :P ).

The guy that runs that site is not an EBC fan for sure... Me, I'm gonna put Rotex Gold's on when the factory pads are worn down a bit more. I'm tired of spending an hour cleaning the car, with 50% of that being just the rims. Ever reached in between the spokes and run your finger along the inside of a spoke??? blech...

I used the very same "disc brake quiet" by CRC as WM did, it did tone the noise down but didn't stop it completely.
I have used it before on other vehicles and it always worked for me then. Maybe I'll scrape it off the Greens and try it again.

While I was getting my car chipped, I was talking with a guy who works with UPsolute Toronto. He said I shouldn't throw away the stock pads, because he has heard nothing good about EBC Green Stuffs. This guy runs a tuner shop so I have to believe he's heard about a lot of performance products.

Check the link to slk32.com I posted above. He's not a fan either. But I'm sure with ANY performance part, there will be someone out there that has a bad experience! Look at Derek's first try for an Upsolute upgrade. He ended up driving from MI to NC to get it done right.

I did a little (more) research into EBC, the Greens have a very poor reputation in the dirt-bike world. They're not all that exalted by the sport car crowd either, I'm hearing about 50/50 love/hate.
Noise seems to be a common problem.

I did hear about D's chip probs. Heck, I went to another country to get mine done!

Matt
-wish I'd dug deeper before I'd bought 'em-

My noise is completely gone... Did you apply it to the guide rails on the caliper as well as the guides and the back of the pad and let it setup prior to reinstalling. Mine are totally silent. They also perform great under extreme braking on an autocross course. I have no complaints. They seem to be wearing very well too. (Just the opinion of someone that's had them for about 6 months now.)

I didn't put any on the rails/guides as they are supposed to slide freely.
I used high temp brake silicone grease (sparingly) on the parts that move.

Yours aren't dragging? It seems to me that would hinder the caliper returning to the relaxed position.
I'll have to try that if I give them another shot.
