Default Check Engine Light

I know we can't do to much about this other then take it to the dealer... .

but I got in my car yesterday... it was raining... I pulled outta the parking lot at school... bam! Check engine light turned on!! Instantly I felt my heart sink...

I turned it off... and it was still on... I drove it on the freeway... on normal roads back to my house... it felt PERFECT! the cold air outside really made it feel even better... no strange noise and no strange feeling...

Then about 12 miles from the parking lot... it turned off...

Today I started the car back up... and it was there....

I haven't added anything ... but my car when I turn it on shows the little mechanic thingy on the mileage display... and it says 500... meaning I need to take it to the shop in 500... I'm almost at 8000 miles... but I dont understand... I just got my old changed at 7200 miles...

Could the check engine like be related to this? ... any ideas? ... Like I said its running excellent!

My PT Cruiser had a similar engine warning light come after the car had done only 400 miles. A quick trip to the dealer found a loose wire. Once properly connected, the engine warning light works correctly.

Suggest you take it in, just in case there is a problem. It will be cheaper than a new engine.

maybe they did not reset the service mileage counter...would explain why it says take it in in 500 miles when you just got service 800 miles ago.

Dunno 'bout the service indicator, but have you checked the fuel cap is on tight? That can cause the check engine light to come on (at least, that's what the sticker under the fuel door says).

I had my last car for 8 years - check engine light was on the whole time.

The dealer told me it was a short in the wire and it would be about 100 bucks for them to fix it - so I just left it on.

Every now and again.... it would turn off.... now THAT was when I got scared!!!

LOL well mine turned off last night... after I hit over 75 mph on I75... just disappeared... it hasnt turned its face again... im thinking it was just a glitch with the fuel management or something... because near the same time my fuel light kicked on as the C.E.L turned off... very strange! I'm heading to the dealer on monday just in case

Better yet... the ECU wont be found unless they actually take apart the ECU compartment... and better yet... I talked to a few DC workers and they said its "f'in" rare as hell that they would ever EVER reflash your ECU...

so how about I dont get blamed for it... and I'll go talk to them....
